Greetings!
Those daffodils will be up soon and we've made it through another Cape Cod winter! Some of the things I've been working on include:
- Creating new content for the Sandwich Guidebook - it is shaping up beautifully - can't wait to get it into the hands of 60,000 residents and visitors this year to promote your business!
- Policy agenda meeting on Feb 28th with the heads of all the Cape's Chambers and many of our legislative delegation - infrastructure, healthcare and tourism services funding were the main focus!
- Great symposium also that day sponsored by the SEIC on how Public-Private Partnership can be shaped to create good projects. Done well, would a design-build-operate contract with an experienced private firm help us solve our wastewater issues?
- Continued advocacy on zoning and sign code revisions to make the permitting process run smoothly and brings it in line with our Local Comprehensive Plan.
- Meeting with the Town Planner, Cape Cod Commission staff and stakeholders in the Merchant's Square area on new bike and pedestrian linkages with the Marina.
Regards,
Kate Bavelock

Beach Committee looking to partner
with local businesses
| |

The Sandwich Beach Committee is looking forward to a wonderful season in our seaside community. However, work continues on lingering problems of keeping our beaches clean, reminding beach-goers of respectful use and dune preservation, bathrooms, boardwalk and stair maintenance.
Would you take a minute to review the town rules for beach stewardship? We need everyone's help to be part of a cultural shift to protect and preserve these wonderful town assets: Sandwich Town Beach Rules
Can you help be part of the solution? Please consider:
- Would you be willing to sponsor a trash barrel ($ donation)?
- Would you be willing to adopt a section of beach (time donation to pick up trash, etc)?
- Would you be willing to help educate your customers with signage, posters or handouts with positive messages about how we value and care for our beaches?
- Would you be willing to attend a meeting in April on what these programs should look like and how we can work together to protect and preserve these wonderful town assets?
If the answer to any of these is yes, I might like to participate - please email kate@sandwichchamber.com and we'll stay in touch as we put structure and specifics around these ideas with your input.

Welcome to the new director of Heritage Museums & Gardens | |
Heritage Museums & Gardens announces the appointment of Ellen Spear to the position of Executive Director. She comes to Heritage from Hancock Shaker Village in, Pittsfield, MA, where she served as President & CEO.
Spear will assume her new position on March 28. She replaces Dr. Scott T. Swank who retired from the post in September 2010. Heritage Board Chairman Linda Calmes Jones expressed the board's confidence that Ms. Spear's extensive leadership experience in the museum world coupled with her strengths in innovation and vision make her the right person to lead Heritage Museums & Gardens. "Community collaboration have been a hallmark of Spear's work and will be an important focus in her new position at Heritage," Jones said.
Ms. Spear said of her appointment, "I am honored to be leading Heritage at this exciting time in the organization's history, and to becoming a part of the community. Heritage has so many important resources to share - its breathtaking landscape, important collections and a deep and varied offering of effective programs. It is truly a Cape Cod treasure that I and my family have enjoyed for many years. I look forward to meeting community members and hearing everyone's thoughts about what kind of future we can build together."
Spear has extensive leadership experience in the museum, community and public radio fields. During her tenure as President and CEO of Hancock Shaker Village, Spear worked with the Board and staff to create a dynamic new business model, a 20 year Preservation Master Plan and a business plan that has been cited by the American Association of Museums as a model for the field. Spear formed new community collaborations and reconnected the Village to the region. Last month HSV was awarded a $1 million grant from the Kresge Foundation. The grant was awarded as part of its Sector Leaders investments, an invitation-only component of the Kresge Arts and Culture Program's Institutional Capitalization initiative recognizing HSV's work under Spear's direction as a visionary organization pursuing transformational projects designed to shift its business model and to serve as a field-wide example of leadership.
Prior to joining Hancock Shaker Village, Spear held posts at Concord Family and Youth Services, the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Project, the USS Constitution Museum, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and WGBH Radio. Ms. Spear, her husband and son will be relocating to the Cape. |
