| Survey Results
Thanks to all who took the time to respond to this survey. As the results indicate networking and health care remain top priorities among SCC members. In the coming months the SCC Program Committee plans to unveil a three part educational seminar series focused entirely on networking. Also planned in 2008, follow up on the ever changing health insurance industry in Mass and more specifically here on the Cape. How have the laws changed and how do they effect your business? What can the SCC do to help provide more reasonable health insurance rates to you and your employees? The Chamber has been working with leading insurance advisors to help answer these most important questions. |

Member Profile
David McDermott
McDermott Glass Studio

David McDermott is passionate about his art. His career choice is the classic example of, 'do what you love, love what you do.'
David is a local guy who grew up in Sagamore and Sandwich. After high school he became an apprentice engraver at Pierpont Glass. "One day I happened to watch Robbie (Master Gaffer Robert Mason) create a swan in about 20 seconds. I couldn't believe you could do something like that. I had to see it to believe it and I was hooked."
In 1999 David attended The Studio at Corning, New York, an internationally renowned teaching facility. It was here where he met his future wife, Yukimi Matsumoto. Matsumoto is from Osaka, Japan and is a graduate of the Osaka Designer School. A mutual admiration developed quickly and David states, "My wife is the most talented human being I've ever met."
David, who always knew he had an artistic bent, worked for the Master at Pierpont for 30 years, learning everything he could about glassblowing. Today he and Yukimi are celebrating 5 years in their own studio. "The first 30 years was theirs - the second 30 is mine."
Two assistants also work for McDermott Glass. Ryan Randa, from Fenton Iowa joined the studio two years ago. "When he found us, he found his love for glass." And Isabel Green is just discovering the world of glass and is currently a senior in Falmouth with a duel enrollment at Cape Cod Community College.
"I've been waiting all my life to pass on what I've learned but I had to be worthy of sharing my knowledge with others," says David.
Glasswork is sold in their studio and at various galleries in the region. Pieces have been commissioned by Heads of State and are on display at such esteemed institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. "I am astounded to have made it this far."
Each year, David hosts world class glass artists from around the region who come together for Glass Jam, a fun day of sharing and relaxing on Cape Cod. This year marked their tenth anniversary.
Referring to the Sandwich Chamber, David says, "I think the Chamber is by far one of the best. It's not only the networking; members take pride in this organization and are getting things done."
David is humbled by his craft and the world of art. Summing it up, he states, "I can't believe I am able to do this for a living. I'm the luckiest guy on the planet!"
McDermott Glass Studio is located at 272 Cotuit Road in Sandwich and is open daily 10-6. Glass blowing, Wed-Sat, 10-6. For more information call
