Ughhhh! Working Out and No Change! SHANTI CONSULTING NEWSLETTER
August 2009

Greetings!

A recent TIME magazine article gave the story of a guy who complained that he worked out and saw no change in his weight. Without getting a professional opinion, he concluded that he might as well not work out. Why should he knock himself out?

If that is what sometimes runs through your mind, then we should look at the facts. Obviously, weight is a balance between food, exercise and metabolism factors. If your weight is always the same, then it would be logical to conclude that if you don't work out, then your weight would increase and your fitness level would obviously decrease.

So what is this thing called a person's fitness level? It is really how conditioned your body is to process energy and use it as fuel. A more fit person burns more calories living life. This is where you want to be.

A fitness professional should be the one recommending to you what weight would be good for you and whether or not you should work on decreasing your current weight and how to get there in a safe way.

Because there are so many paths to getting to your target healthy weight, it is best to leave it to the professional to constantly monitor and advise you on how to get your whole exercise, food, stress relief program together.

Keep in mind that stress plays a big role in our weight control. Therefore, we should always include stress relief methodologies like yoga, meditation, tai chi, journalling into our plan.

  • How to Get Free Sessions

If you are already training with Shanti Consulting, then you can get free sessions if someone you recommend signs up for more than 2 sessions.

So tell all your friends, and just wait for free sessions!

    Special Populations - Osteoporosis, Fibromyalgia

What about exercise for those special populations who have a medical condition? The answer depends on the individual. There is no one answer fits all.

Just like prenatal exercise, it is important to understand the fitness level of the person before they were diagnosed with a special condition. If they were active individuals, then their exercise program would still have to be relatively intense compared to those who have had a lower activity level.

Again, a fitness professional can advise you accordingly. It is good to always get several expert opinions and weigh them yourself.

    Gift Certificates

If you know someone who wants to get their fitness program into gear, then Shanti Consulting has gift certificates for 1, 2 or 3 sessions.

Why not have a slumber party with a deep relaxation and stretch session? How about a bridal shower with some yoga? Do you know a friend who has a major birthday or special day coming up? Ask them if they would like stress reduction sessions, or toning sessions.

Summer is the best time to give some presents to people to start booking in the fall. We do have a waiting list so get yourself on it today to start your road to fitness.

    Finding the Right Trainer

Recently, many people have told me stories about trainers, good and bad. Therefore, I thought I would talk a little about how to choose one that is right for you.

The first thing to keep in mind is that like any other service provider, not all providers are for all people. Isn't there that doctor you like, that your friend doesn't? Or that hair dresser you like? Or that mechanic or garage you like?

Similarly, it is important to ensure that you have a healthy relationship with your fitness trainer. They have to get into your space, therefore you should really like them being there. If some exercise prescription doesn't feel right, you have to have the comfort level to say so and have them modify to achieve your goals.
