"On the wings of Angels come glad tidings and great news" . . . so what better way to bring you glad tidings and great news from MCC Omaha? |
The Lord's Prayer
|
|

Lord's Prayer Meditation Pastor Tom
As we continue to journey into the Lord's Prayer by experiencing different versions, I would invite you to embrace this beautiful Aramaic version of the Lord's Prayer.
The music is beautiful, ancient, and with many images of Christianity from around the world and across time. Jesus likely spoke Aramaic, so this may be as close as we get to the "real" Lord's Prayer.
The words you'll hear chanted in the background are the first words of the Lord's Prayer: Abun d'bashmayo which we render "Our God who art in Heaven", but a better translation might be: "Oh Thou, from whom the breath of life comes, who fills all realms of sound, light and vibration."
The prayer will be spoken in Aramaic and then sung. It's worth your time. It's a glimpse of where we come from.
I would recommend that you first center yourself, align your body to prepare for prayer, maybe light a candle, and take a couple of deep breaths. Don't just watch it, but come into it. It lasts about six minutes.
Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= pKBtb3zZhOE&feature=related
Sunday in worship, we will experience the Lord's Prayer as interpreted and translated in the Syriac Bible (also known as the Pshita), it dates to the 4th century, that's 1,200 year before any English translation was rendered.
On Palm Sunday, we'll bring it all together.

Prayer: A Lenten Study |
Wednesdays 7:45 p.m.
Does God hear our prayers?
If God knows
everything, why do we need to pray?
Can I pray without words? Are there right words and wrong words? What if we pray for opposite
things?
How do I listen for God's answers? If you have ever
asked any of these questions, we invite you to join us for the next five
weeks
as we study and discuss prayer.
Using activities from Jane
Vennard's book, A Praying Congregation: The Art of Teaching
Spiritual Practice, we'll explore together answers to these and
other
questions about prayer.
Our final session will culminate in the March
31

Movers/Helpers Needed
|
|
Sunday, March 7
and Monday, March 8 - Friday, March 12
The initial steps to recarpeting the Sanctuary
begin Sunday
following the 11 a.m. service. Those steps include
· Stacking
all chairs & moving them to Ted's room
· Pulling
up all the carpet & folding it
· Moving
the carpet tiles from storage to MCC
On Monday, the carpet will be put into a dumpster for
hauling
away and preparation on the floor begins!
How can you help?
Let us know.
By Sunday we hope to know some work times for Monday
and the rest of the week.
Check with Eric Hays-Strom elstrom99@yahoo.com
or Carla Petersen sharlavanpeters@aol.com
for more
details!
When will the carpeting be completed? We don't
yet know. Your help will make it go faster.
We anticipate having
a Sunday or two where the Sanctuary may be "carpet-less" or in some
phase of "being carpeted." That means we'll be setting
dates and times to move chairs back and for in and out of the Sanctuary
for
Sunday Worship.

Kitchen Update
|
|
Thanks to a number of community groups and individuals,
changes are beginning to be visible in the kitchen.
Two range hoods
were
ordered this week and a new range will replace the older yellow range.
New dishes adorn the kitchen shelves and all the shelves have been
cleaned.
We've restocked the spice shelves with supplies that came from NAP in
anticipation of the Friday lunch program starting April 2.
Watch for
more
changes coming soon.

Holy Thursday Dinners |
|

"Come to the Table"
On the Thursday before
Easter, MCC Omaha will
host dinner gatherings to remember the night when Jesus gathered his
followers and celebrated the ancient Jewish Festival of the Passover.
It was
on that night that he washed the feet of the disciples and at the end of
the
meal celebrated the first Communion meal with them.
So, on April 1, you
are invited to "Come to the Table" to remember that night as we
prepare for Easter.
Six hosts have agreed to organize the dinners. The host is responsible for providingthe
main dish for the evening and for planning a celebration that helps us
remember
that very special night. Guests are asked to bring a side dish for the
meal. Guests
will sign up to participate in the Thursday Meal and will be assigned to the various hosts to allow us all a
chance
to get to know new people.
So, if you would like to attend one of these
Dinner Gatherings, please sign up on one of the lists posted at the
greeters' table at church. Please note if you have pet allergies,
mobility or accessibility issues, or if you have children who will be
attending. This will help us assign you to an appropriate site for a
dinner since dinners will be held in various homes. All dinners will be held on
Thursday, April
1, at various times and at various locations. The menus and the
rituals chosen to go with dinner will vary from home to home, but we
assure you
that each will be a deeply moving spiritual experience.
If you have
questions, contact Sharon Van Butsel at Sharonv@mccomaha.org or Royal Bush at
Royalb@mccomaha.org. |

Survey Help Needed
|
|
MCC Size Summit
MCC Omaha leadership will be attending a multi-state denominational summit in Kansas City in April. There, they will examine the opinions of our congregation and learn how to apply that information to continue to grow our church and meet the needs of this community.
In order to gather those opinions, we need your help. Please click this link to take the survey:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SYRMVWC
Contact Pastor Tom at PastorTom@MCCOmaha.org or a member of the Board of Directors or Council of Ministries if you have any questions.
Take time now to complete the survey. We want to hear your voice.

Financial Update
|
|
Analyzing Budgetary Goals In reviewing the chart above, December 2009's goal was $10,880 and $12,044 was needed monthly to meet our financial obligations in 2010. As illustrated in both charts (see also below), we have not yet made these goals.
It is not too late to change the direction of our finances. Fifty-three individuals have pledged to support the church with monthly tithes and others add to that amount with weekly donations.
Be part of the solution so that MCC Omaha is a financially healthy, responsible church that can pay its bills and continue its ministries.
Prayerfully consider your role in supporting MCC Omaha.

Chile's Earthquake |
|
MCC Moderator Calls for Vigilant Prayer
in the Aftermath of Chilean Earthquake
In the
early morning hours of Feb. 27, the people of Chile
suffered what experts are saying was the 5th largest earthquake the
world has known since 1900. It comes just a month after the devastation
in Haiti, and was followed by an earthquake of smaller magnitude in
Argentina, which took the life of an 8-year-old boy.
I am in
contact with The Rev. Hector Gutierrez, our program coordinator for
South America and he has been in communication with his contacts in
Chile and they report, "We are ok and there are no deaths in our close
circle of friends and their families". Though little information is
available at this time, we know that at least 700 people in the areas
surrounding the epicenter of the earthquake have died and that as many
as 1.5 million have been left homeless. At least two dozen aftershocks
of significant force have been reported.
Today, I am
asking all MCCers and people of faith to join me in praying for our
brothers and sisters in Chile, especially the members, families and
friends of Nuevo Espiritu ICM in Santiago and Grupo Cafarnaum in
Concepcion.
The Chilean
Red Cross is handling disaster relief, and at this time believes it has
the resources to care for people in need. Should that change, I will
share with you how MCCers can provide further assistance.
For now, I
ask that you pray with me for those who have died and their loved ones
who survive, for those left homeless and in shock, and for the healing
of the earth.
We are a
people of strong faith and conviction, and we know that in all suffering
and disaster God is working for restoration and healing. May our
prayers be joined to that good and saving work.
Grace and Peace,
The Rev.
Elder Nancy Wilson, Moderator
