Today, many people in our community live alone, with few family members living close. They may be seniors, families struggling financially or individuals with physical or mental disabilities and, yes, living in our neighborhoods, right next door.
Mary is one such neighbor who's lived in Holland for over 34 years.
Mary's story is simple and one that many can relate too. Mary knew few neighbors. Her home is located in Good Samaritan Ministries (GSM) newest Neighborhood Connections (NC) area. Shannon, GSM's Community Connector, lives across the street, met Mary at a garage sale and in the week's following began greeting her with a simple "Hi neighbor". Mary noticed other neighbors doing the same; conversations began and Mary started to get to know her neighbors. That is when things changed.
Mary received a city code violation due to deterioration of her home and the amount of outside clutter. Mary was overwhelmed and knew the clean-up would be physically challenging. That is when Shannon, the neighbors and many others came together to offer their support and assistance.
Today, windows are painted, the garage is repaired, the clutter removed, trees trimmed and the backyard supports a beautiful vegetable garden. A garden, that Mary takes care of with the assistance of her friends, the neighbors. "Yes, my neighbors helped me with some things that I can't do physically but their greatest asset is the encouragement they gave me. It's nice to know they are there."
