Why we do what we do...
Our Neighborhood Connections (NC) approach expands our work beyond individuals by promoting systemic change that will have long term impact on poverty in neighborhoods. It is a holistic process that values all people and celebrates diversity.
Five active sites, 66 people trained in Asset Based Community Development, 880+ volunteer hours 170+ projects/events AND three residents in Holland's Leadership Training - that shows results!
Neighbor Janine shared, "I have found unconditional acceptance. The community has helped me see the gifts I have to share and I helped with EXPLOSION creative camp for our neighborhood kids!"
Community Connector Wasana has been with Heights of Hope for four years and loves to recall the stories of change for the neighbors. "Even those who are not at meetings regularly have learned how to make the community a better place to live."

You are helping Good Samaritan to encourage middle school youth through eight locations in Holland/Zeeland, 17 AmeriCorps members, 90 volunteers, 3100+ hours we are impacting over 500 students - that's accomplishment!
Adults surround at-risk youth and build relationships to help maintain and increase their developmental assets. This is an evidenced-based model for creating "authoritative communities" for youth. Partners provide safe environments, structured programming, and caring, trusting relationships with adults. (Developmental assets are those personal attributes which enable youth to grow and mature in a healthy manner. Last year 82% of mentored youth report having at least 6 of 8 developmental assets.) Jessica shares her passion for youth and community, "It is challenging at times because of the emotional "baggage" and some of the choices they make, but it is an awesome opportunity to draw out the good in them and see them grow!"
While Jessica was demonstrating the power of being positive, Seankesse said without prompting, "That's why I like it here." In his second year at The Rock/Holland Rescue Mission center Seankesse shared, "It's a place to meet friends. I get homework done and they help if I need it. We do things you don't normally do at home - like time at the park, basketball and field trips!"
