Tea Party Activists Simmer in Rockville!

On Saturday morning April 18, over a hundred concerned citizens gathered in front of the Montgomery County government offices on Monroe Street to voice their concerns about the increasing intrusion of government into their pockets and their lives.

Ficker

County residents filled "teabags" with messages of concern about spending to County Executive Ike Leggett.  They were presented to his office on Tuesday by president of the Upper Montgomery Women's Republican Club Patti Witham, and activists Eric Cary and Sylvia Darrow. You can read the Gazette story here:
Still Tea'd Off

At the rally on Saturday, District 4 Council Candidate Robin Ficker (pictured above) recited the long list of recent state and local tax increases.  Charles Lollar, a Charles County tax activist spoke passionately about the undue burden onerous taxation is putting on hardworking citizens and their families.   Eric Cary, a black conservative activist spoke about the unfair negative media coverage of the tea parties movement. He shared his experience at the Washington D.C. tea party on April 15 where he watched the news teams as them zoomed in only on participants who physical appearance could promote the specific image they were trying to convey. Whenever Eric simply moved towards a news team, they studiously turned away from him.

Remember that you have the power to make a difference by getting involved.  Right here in Montgomery County we have a rare opportunity to elect a Republican to the County Council through the May 19 Special Election in District 4.  Read more about that in this newsletter.

The daunting burden of taxation will be growing at hyper-speed.  Keep in mind that the Montgomery County budget has grown from $2.1 billion in 1998 to $4.3 billion in 2008, a 7.4% compound annual growth rate, yet County residents' personal incomes, including population growth, has grown at a slower 5.7% per year. By growing at a rate 30% faster than residents' actual incomes, over $600 million in "extra" annual spending has been added to the county budget.

Robin Ficker Wins Council District 4 Primary, Democratic Results Up In The Air
- by Glynis Kazanjian

While District 4 voters may safely assume that the Republican primary winner for the Council County seat is Robin Ficker, with a 57.90% share of the votes, Democrats may have to wait a little longer to learn who their nominee will be.  With a mere 78 vote difference between Democratic candidates Nancy Navarro and House Delegate Ben Kramer, as of election night there are yet three absentee ballot canvasses to be held over the next week, with the last occurring on Friday, May 1, the deadline for absentee ballots postmarked by April 21.

The first canvass of general absentee ballots will be counted on Thursday, April 23, beginning at 12:30pm.  There are 743 outstanding absentee ballots of this type, according to the MC Board of Elections.  Results will be added to the existing tally and updated on the Board of Elections website no later than Friday morning.

As is election law, the provisional ballots will not be counted until the first Monday after the election, in this case, Monday, April 27.  There are 86 provisional ballots currently being reviewed, according to Dr. Gilberto "Dr. Z" Zelaya, the MC Board of Elections Community Outreach Liaison.   Provisional ballots are  questionable ballots, typically associated with voters who are unable to provide identification that matches the information the board of elections has on file for them, such as a new address or political party affiliation, or those  who registered after the registration deadline.

There is no telling how many additional absentee ballots will come in next week, but candidate Ben Kramer did put on an aggressive front by mailing out absentee ballots to all Democratic voters in District 4.  Nancy Navarro, on the other hand, used an old, but proven strategy of negative campaigning.  The last weekend before the election, Navarro sent out multiple mailers condemning Kramer for past votes and tying him to the building and development industry, even using one newspaper quote from 1997.  Navarro, however, is the candidate who received the official endorsement of the building industry.

District 4: Get out the vote in May 19 Special Council District Four Election!

This past week's primary determined that Robin Ficker will be the Republican candidate to go up against either Ben Kramer or Nancy Navarro.  (See story above on the too-close-to-call Democrat primary.)  The Montgomery County Republican Party appreciates the passion and hard work of all three candidates, including Lou August and Andrew Padula.

But now that the primary election is over, we must get out and support the Republican candidate.  Even if you do not live in District 4, please help to break up the Democrat monopoly on the County Council by getting out the vote.   To find out how you can help, click on Robin Ficker's website:
