Greetings!
Join the Protest of the EZ Pass TaxPromoting
the EZ-Pass system as a means to achieve greater traffic efficiency and
to reduce highway congestion was a hallmark of the Ehrlich
Administration's transportation policy.
Unfortunately, under
Governor O'Malley's leadership, the EZ-Pass program will be turned into
a cash cow as a newly-created monthly administrative fee will be
assessed as a tax on all EZ-Pass account holders.
In a typically
cavalier lack of transparency increasingly shown by the O'Malley
Administration, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MdTA) adopted
the new EZ-Pass administrative fees as well as increased tolls on
truckers in January after allowing a public comment period of only 22
days between the announcement of their intention to raise fees and the
final adoption by the Board.
At this stage, the only way that
these increases can be reversed is if Governor O'Malley rejects the new
fees. During the 2006 campaign, then-candidate O'Malley promised to not
"nickel and dime" Maryland's citizens with unsuspected transportation
fee increases.
TO REGISTER YOUR PROTEST: The "Legislative Action
Center" of AAA Mid-Atlantic has posted an online alert that allows
Maryland citizens to contact Governor O'Malley urging him to reverse
these fee increases. To access the AAA Mid-Atlantic website. MidAtlantic AAA website Action CenterYou
may also want to contact your business colleagues, friends and
neighbors and encourage them to protest these transportation policy
decisions that are detrimental to Maryland's businesses and citizens.

Washington Post Article Spotlights County Disability Pension Abuse
In the past week a Washington Post highlighted the findings of Montgomery County Inspector General Thomas Dagley concerning the county's employee disability pensions. See Washington Post Story
According to the Post story:
"No other local government appears to award disability retirement
packages as often as Montgomery, where 41 percent of officers who
retired between 2000 and 2007 receive the benefit. In contrast, not one
of the 252 police officers who retired from the Fairfax County force in
that period is collecting disability.
"In the past 10 years, 91 percent of Montgomery's officers who applied
for disability payments received them. The county pays about $38
million a year to all public safety and general government disabled
retirees. Officials were unable to immediately break down the payments
to police."
Inspector General Thomas Dagley's office's reports are a valuable source of information about problems with the county government. See Inspector General Reports

O'Malley Fiddles While Maryland Burns
 ANNAPOLIS
-- In light of falling tax revenues, Governor Martin O'Malley, author
of the largest tax increase in Maryland history, is calling for more
cuts in state spending. These cuts may include revisiting state worker
layoffs and across the board state worker pay decreases. Even cutting
education spending is not off the table.
"Republicans tried to
warn Governor O'Malley that if you raise taxes, particularly during a
recession, tax revenues will go way down because people leave the state
or do their shopping elsewhere," said MDGOP Chairman Jim Pelura.
"Our
state is hemorrhaging businesses, retirees, and families, because of
out of control taxation and an unfriendly climate for free enterprise.
Rather than pulling back the reins on the growth of government when
revenues were already down, O'Malley added spending to this year's
budget and is now having to backtrack.
"Maybe Martin O'Malley
should have been spending more time working to really streamline
Maryland's government and relieve the burden on working families and
less time recording his latest 'O'Malley's March' albumn," Pelura
concluded.
"In the midst of a budget crisis, during one of the
most difficult economic times our state and nation has faced in recent
years, Martin O'Malley is holding a "CD Release Party" in Baltimore on
Saturday, March 14th to promote his newest album. Tickets are $25,"
said MDGOP Executive Director Justin Ready. "Perhaps Governor O'Malley
could donate the proceeds from that event to help state employees keep
their jobs."
