This Tuesday evening, January 25, President Obama will be giving his State Of The Union Address to Congress. Some people are gathering at 7 PM for Watch Parties for this event. There will be at least seven Watch Parties at homes in Dallas (and others in suburbs like Mesquite, Coppell, and Duncanville) connected with Organizing for America. They write that supporters will be "sticking around after to craft the strategy we'll use to support the agenda President Obama will lay out.' You can find the one nearest to you, and RSVP online, at this page. In Irving there will be a Watch Party at 7 PM at 1509 Colony, Irving. The Stonewall Democrats of Dallas will be hosting their own Watch Party from 7 to 10 PM at The Brick, 2525 Wycliff, Dallas. It's free, with $2 Skyy Vodka drinks throughout the event. |

Louise Hilma Ballerstedt Raggio passed away at 91 on Sunday in Dallas after a long illness. She was one of the most important attorneys in Texas history, helping bring about major changes in laws affecting women both in Congress and the legislature. Perhaps most notable here was the passage of the Texas Marital Property Act of 1967, which repealed laws that had subjected married women in Texas to some of the most inane restrictions in the country. Her daughter-in-law Lorraine Raggio is a Democratic District Judge in Dallas, and her son Grier Raggio, Jr., was a Democratic candidate for Congress. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Saturday at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas. A memorial will be at 2 PM Sunday at the First Unitarian Church, 4015 Normandy Ave. in Dallas. Raggio received numerous awards (there is a long partial list at Wikipedia.) The Dallas News ran not only an article, but also an editorial about this pioneer. There is a great short video about her life on line at YouTube. Google Books has a preview on line of her biography, "Texas Tornado: The Life Of A Crusader For Women's Rights And Family Justice", which is also available at Amazon. |

Many good active Democrats do and have done a lot for their party and community, as Precinct Chairs and other elected and appointed officials. Often they just go about their invaluable tasks quietly, not getting news coverage when they pass away. Sadly, especially with media increasing charges for obituary notices, we don't always hear about their departures in time to give notice here in advance of funerals or memorials. We would appreciate it if you would email us with details of the passing of present or former Precinct Chairs, elected, appointed, or party offficials. Thank you. |

The Dallas County Executive Committee will hold its quarterly meeting on Tuesday, February 8, at 6:30 PM, at the Communication Workers of America Hall, at 1408 N. Washington at Bryan, Dallas. The Executive Committee consists of the County Chair, County Secretary, and all Precinct Chairs in the county. While other Democrats are free to observe without voting, seating and parking may be limited. At this meeting, Precinct Chairs will caucus by state House districts to select one or two members from each district to serve on the DCDP Advisory Council. Only Precinct Chairs are eligible to vote. Only Precinct Chairs or SDEC members from a House district may be chosen as members of the Advisory Council for that district. |
