Field Testing vs. Clinical Testing
by Coach Matt Russ
Clinical testing offers a wealth of information, and is great for creating a "big picture" comprehension of an athlete's fitness, but also has some drawbacks. Field tests will not offer the wealth of information that clinical tests deliver, but they are easy to administer, inexpensive (or free), practical, and can be performed more frequently. The purpose of a field test is two-fold: to accurately gauge progress of fitness, and to establish accurate training zones. Read on... |

Athlete of the Month
Name: Dave Stock
Accomplishment: Ironman training is tough. It is physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. The task of a coach is to prepare an athlete for an event that is going to last 1/2 a day, and the stakes are raised as the athlete sets performance goals. Dave has raced for almost a decade, and came to me with the goal of qualifying for Ironman World Championships. This is his first year in the 60-64 AG. Youth is on his side.
This season, I've asked Dave to change many things about his training. I've admired his ability to adapt to these changes. One of the biggest changes he's had to overcome is the limited number of times he had the opportunity to be on a start line. He is commonly on the top of his Age Group podium and he continued that trend this season at Mach Tenn Triathlon (60-64 AG Champion). Ironman training requires significant internal motivation. Week after week of high volume training with no real reward, only the dream, the goal, the image of Kona on the end of the line. It is daunting. Through an age group victory, there is an instant gratification. Those around you recognize your talent, and make no mistake, Dave Stock is a force to be reckoned with at the age of 60. But this season, I've kept him on the sidelines...waiting for Ironman Louisville. Win, Lose, or Draw on August 28 (race day), I am proud of his efforts this season. He has stuck to the plan, he adapted to change, and is going into Ironman race day more prepared than ever before.
