Shepherd's Staff: WHAT DOES IT MATTER?
| The General Conference of the United Methodist Church is meeting right now in Tampa, Florida. This is the conference which meets every four years and represents the worldwide United Methodist Church. Over a third of the delegates are now from Africa. The General Conference revises the Book of Discipline (our standards of United Methodist beliefs, organization, and procedures), and they are the only body that can speak for the entire denomination.
So it's a big deal. But it's also a large gathering of human beings (albeit disciples of Jesus) with many diverse opinions. So the first day of the Conference was spent wrangling over the rules of procedure that would allow issues to be addressed. My friend Michael Roberts, who is a delegate, posted on Facebook: "The first day of General Conference is over, and I have a confession to make. I'm struggling with how this all matters. I've talked to several pastors of local congregations, and a theme has emerged. I keep hearing about how nothing we do really affects them or their congregations at the local level."
Indeed, Tampa, Florida, and General Conference seem very far removed from good old FUMCHS. What does it matter what they do, really? How will it affect what we do in the local church?
This is also a question we ask on the annual conference level, which includes all the United Methodist Churches in Arkansas. I have been working on a state-wide initiative called Imagine Ministry for over two years, and some significant changes are underway in our annual conference. In my new position as a District Superintendent, I will be even more intimately involved in these changes in structure, budgets, and programming. What does it matter? Will it make any difference in the local church?
We might even ask this question at the local church level. Sometimes our attitude seems to be, "I don't care what is going on outside of my comfort zone. As long as I have my pew in the sanctuary or my chair in ConneXion and can enjoy a good worship service, I'm not really concerned with all the hoopla going on in church committees, the annual conference, or the general conference."
I understand that completely. When you get to the bottom line, it's all about our relationship to God, and that relationship is fostered in the ministries of the local church--worship, study, pastoral care, and mission. Even the Council of Bishops recognizes that, dedicating the next decade of church energy and resources to revitalizing local congregations. The local church is the primary place where disciples are made who can transform the world.
But the United Methodist Church is a big organization. We have history and structures and budgets and policies and doctrine that is a part of who we are. We are connected to over 7 million United Methodists in America and another 5 million abroad through our systems of districts, annual conferences, all the way to General Conference. We have a connection. We are an historical, organized denomination that is undergoing lots of changes. These changes need to count for something, or we will go the way of the dodo--extinction. More importantly, we have an opportunity to use our organization to make a real difference for Jesus Christ in the world.
So in answer to Michael's post, I suggested that we look at our denomination in light of John Wesley's three simple rules, as articulated by Bishop Reuben Job.
First, do no harm. Institutions often organize to preserve the status quo. If we can prevent the institution from erecting impediments to the transformational work of the Gospel, we need to do that. We need to pray to God and do our best to keep from making bad decisions and doing stupid stuff that will prevent disciple-making transformation.
Second, do good. We have huge resources of people, money and facilities, from our local church to the worldwide denomination. We need to establish structures, budgets, and programs that will allow and encourage local congregations to be more effective in ministry. If somehow we can get the church out of the way to let the Holy Spirit work through the disciples of Jesus in a mission field, we will see transformation. That matters.
Finally, stay in love with God. Personally, we do this by our disciplined use of the means of grace--worship, prayer, Scripture, sacraments, fellowship, and service. But it is equally important that in the larger connections of the church, we never forget that the whole Christian agenda can be summarized in one word: love. Jesus put it in this nutshell: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength, and your neighbor as yourself."
If our General Conference delegation, our annual conference delegates, our pastors and lay leaders can keep love a priority, that will be faithful discipleship. If they can come through this time of holy conferencing and deep change and still be in love with God, that, too, will be a victory!
Last week, the General Conference held legislative committees that decided on issues to be brought before the whole body for consideration this week. The report is that the worship has been inspirational and the discussions respectful of differing views. You can follow the action on the website www.gc2012.umc.org. Continue to keep them and us all in your prayers!
Keep the faith,
Bro. Bud

CONFIRMATION CLASS BRINGS IN 23 NEW MEMBERS
|
We had a great confirmation class this year! Eighteen excellent young people participated in eight class sessions, an overnight retreat, and a field trip to the Jewish temple. Bud Reeves, Carl Ownbey, Teresa Holt, Bill Skaggs, and Michelle Wilkins all led the class. We are so appreciative of the parents who accompanied them on each step of the journey, and for our older youth mentors (Erin Kandlbinder, Kristin Lovelady, Kristin Shults, Joe Hudon, Van O'Rorke, and Claire Bodemann) who came alongside the younger students. It was an exciting time of spiritual growth for everyone. These are our newest members of FUMCHS:

Confirming their baptismal vows: Carson Muldoon, Landon Muldoon, Ashleigh Andres, Kailey Bausch, William Burgess, David Regenhardt, Will Staton, Ben Turner, Adrian Ahlbrandt, Kodie Brown, Zachary Brown, Canyon Geisleman, Jacob Tester, Hannah Whorton, Drew Yarborough.

Moving Into the Neighborhood
Your BHAGG team met this past Tuesday, and we progressed toward some initial ideas on moving into the neighborhood. The demographics for the area, in a one mile radius of the church, tell us that we are a diverse community of limited income and schooling. There is limited discretionary income available, but a desire and need for outdoor sports, free entertainment and access to the internet. We want to be in the posture of cultivating what is good in our community and creating out of the needs and interests of our community. Therefore, we want to cultivate pride, respect, and identity for this part of Hot Springs. We want to find out the services currently available and assist and enhance, versus repeating and duplicating services. We want to explore entertainment options as connections into the community (i.e. basketball hoops in the parking lot, a possibility of storefront caf on Ouachita, afterschool tutoring, and outdoor entertainment options such as concerts and movies on the parking lot). We need your prayers about these ministries. We felt a consensus spirit as we shared at our meeting, but these first steps are important and we don't want to move too fast or slow, or in the wrong direction. If you would like to share in our study with the book, papers, videos or demographic study, contact Teresa Holt at 501-623-6668, or disciple@fumchs.com and she will be glad to provide you with the resources. Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 22nd.
Discipleship Ministries Planning Teams
We are currently in the planning stages of Discipleship small group ministries for 2012-2013. Discipleship has been divided into planning teams of women's ministries; extended studies; short term and Wednesday night studies; recovery groups; and health, fitness and spirituality groups. If you would like to be a part of one of these planning teams, contact Teresa at 501-623-6668 or disciple@fumchs.com
Knit Wits
Knit Wits began as a prayer shawl group in the early 2000's. Its purpose was to provide prayers and prayer shawls for people in need of love and prayer by knitting or crocheting a shawl to wrap them in God's love. That is still our purpose and we have expanded our mission in the following ways.
Each baby or young child that is baptized is given a shawl as a remembrance and each new baby is given a tiny cap.
We knit/crochet hats for women and men who have lost their hair from chemo. These hats are meant to do more than cover a head. Peg Putnam embellishs them and we try to make them special. These hats are given to Genesis Cancer Center and Arkansas Oncology Assoc. They are also available for others to give to family members
or friends.
This past year we have made mittens, hats, scarves. and afghans for the Jones Mill project - Open Doors. A new project for the year is making things for Hillcrest Children's Home.
About 25 women are involved in Knit Wits. We meet in room 207 in the Christian Life Center the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 1:30PM till 3:30PM. If you knit or crochet or would like to learn, come join us. We would love to have you...

CHILDREN'S CHOIR CONCERT A BIG HIT!!! Last Wednesday evening our 3 children's choirs presented their "End of the Year Spring Concert" in the CLC in front of their family and friends, and THEY WERE AMAZING! The PreK/K Choir, under the direction of Tina Seel, performed 3 songs, and used motions on all three of them. They were dressed in their white robes, so they looked and sounded like little angels. The Jr. Choir used instruments on two their songs and sang a praise and worship song that got the crowd clapping. Sheree Pictured: Pre-K Choir O'Rorke leads this ensemble and Martha Culp provided the awesome piano playing for two of their songs. The Caroler's Choir presented their favorite musical selections, recited a verse from scripture, and sang the hymn "What A Friend We Have in Jesus". There 9 soloist that divided up the 2nd and 3rd verses of the popular hymn. I would like to personally thank Donna Willard for her assistance each week with this choir. And a big thanks goes to all the parents, grandparents, and great church folks that showed up and supported the children's choirs, we love to sing for you.
