USCCB Responds to AUSCP Resolution on the Roman Missal

Dear Members of AUSCP,

At our Inaugural Assembly in Tampa, June 11-14, 2012 a resolution was passed to respectfully request that the USCCB petition the Vatican for redress on how the Roman Missal, Third Edition was prepared and implemented according to the norms and provisions of the Second Vatican Council and many Canons of the 1983 Code of Canon Law.  The resolution was the inspiration of Fr. Mike Ryan, Pastor of the Cathedral in Seattle, Washington who is both a member of AUSCP and a participant of the Inaugural Assembly.  He was honored with our first Blessed Pope John XIII Award.  On July 2, 2012 Dave Cooper sent this resolution with a cover letter of explanation to Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, current Chair of the USCCB.

We have received a response from the Secretariat of Divine Worship in Washington, D.C.   It is dated August 24, 2012 and is addressed to the Association of U.S. Catholic Priests.

"Cardinal Timothy Dolan, President of the USCCB, forwarded your letter of July 2, 2012, to me and asked me to respond on his behalf.  The Committee on Divine Worship has received a great deal of feedback expressing a wide range of opinions and observations about the Roman Missal, Third Edition, and the catechetical process of preparation for its implementation.  I am grateful for the feedback and the concerns of those who participated in the meeting of the Association of U.S. Catholic Priests earlier this year.  I will share your letter and the resolution of AUSCP with the members of the Committee on Divine Worship in preparation for their next meeting in November, 2012 in Baltimore.  I would be happy to discuss this with your further."

This is a small breakthrough but may be a "foot in the door" to an eventual dialogue with bishops.  It is a small sign of hope; it is a big step forward for our fledgling AUSCP!  The Leadership Team continues to discuss ways to respond and we are most solicitous of your ideas.
