March 2012 Newsletter

As spring breaks so are our hopes awakening for the Association of US Catholic Priests. We are moving ahead at full speed with plans for our Inaugural Assembly, and regional AUSCP meetings are breaking out across the country. Along with our fully active website, this Spring Newsletter hopes to keep our membership in touch with AUSCP developments and invite your fuller participation.

Brothers, please use the website and blog!webandblog

The Leadership Team decided to create a blog on our website (www.uscatholicpriests.org) so that all Association members would have a public forum to participate in a dialogue about what is happening with us and the church. We hope the blog becomes a usable vehicle for us to communicate as brothers. Of course, this responsibility rests on each member and not just on the Leadership Team. The blog is a humble means for priest-to-priest dialogue and to present concerns to the Leadership Team. We need this forum for mutual support. Many of us requested this for the sake of our own sanity and our ministries with the people of God.

Planning our First National Assemblyassemblyplan

Our national Leadership Team was welcomed to St. Leo University, near Tampa, Florida, on January 17th by Fr. Tony Kissel. The warm and inviting campus will be our home for our first national gathering. Tony showed us around. As we walked through the buildings we grew more confident of a dynamic celebration in June. We needed the time to envision how this would all unfold. How can we create an environment that will enable fellowship, inspiration, leisure, nurture, prayer and rest? Tony Kissel pulled out all the stops for us, put several of us up in his own house, and bent over backwards using all the resources of the university so that we would be at home and could enjoy the full support of his own university staff. The university president, Arthur F. Kirk, welcomed us and assured us of his full support.

We met for several days of hard work and planning for the various speakers and break-out sessions. We sat in classrooms and a lecture hall where will be meeting to iron out details like rules for the assembly, a realistic schedule, break-out sessions, what to do with a Parliamentarian, and how to handle resolutions. The template for how we members can make resolutions, before, during and after the assembly will be posted soon on our website. Food, housing, costs, registration fees, and media-support were negotiated with a most cooperative university staff.

[When yours truly went out for a phone call, I returned to find out that I had been elected to full board membership and handed responsibility for this newsletter. Thanks for the vote of confidence, dear leadership team! Sorry that this issue is so late. -Bob Cushing, editor]

Once a year our leadership team is required to meet to conduct business face-to-face. We felt this was the right place to have it happen. We enjoyed most of our meals in the cafeteria where we will be dining this summer. Familiarity with the campus made us grateful for the use of golf-carts for those in need of them. Transportation to the campus from the airport has been arranged. Hospitality will be extended not only by students and staff who will be there for us, but we hope that our 27 Founding Fathers will be able to come early and become familiar with the campus so that new members can be welcomed by us. Our three days of planning were foundational but not quite enough to embrace the agenda before us. Next year we will need another day to plan.

AUSCP's Inaugural Assembly: Vatican II Lives!assemblyinfo

The brochures are out at last! All the information is also available on our website.  After months and weeks of dreaming, drafting, meeting, telephone calling, renegotiating speaker commitments, scheduling and rescheduling break-out sessions, we can now lay our hands on the completed brochure, book our own commitments and invite our brother priests. Our hats are off to Jim Sauer who has given himself so totally to this labor of love, working with Tony Kissel's staff at St. Leo's on the myriad of details so that the brochure could come together and be published. To get the early bird discounts, be sure to register as soon as possible. The June 11-14 gathering at St. Leo University will be a ground-breaking event for the priesthood in the United States, the cornerstone of our association's future as an organic body called to re-invigorate our priesthood and our church.

Almost every Tuesday afternoon your leadership team meets on the phone to review committee reports and process plans for the national assembly. Dave Cooper continues to chair the meetings, even when he is traveling or away from his busy parish in Milwaukee.

Membership reportmembership

Bernard Survil reports that our membership has now reached nearly 450 men.  He and his worthy assistants, Harry Meyer and Bill Petron, have rallied regional meetings and pioneered forays into new dioceses to invite membership and participation.

Recent Members Regional Gatheringsregionalgatherings

In Columbus, Ohio, fifty-six priests from nine dioceses in five states gathered ... on January 24, 2012, for a regional meeting of our new association. The agenda included two talks, by Father Don Cozzens on the consequences of making a commitment to the priesthood, and by Father Jim Bacik on the "dialectical virtues" required of priests if they are to follow Christ faithfully. Small group discussions and organizational business items interspersed the day-long meeting.

This regional gathering reflects our effort to organize a collective voice for Roman Catholic priests across the country. Nine priests from the Columbus Diocese applied for membership at this gathering.

Most priests know that there is a division among priests in the United States, basically three groups or "cohorts" of priests modeling their theology and ministry on Pope John XXIII/Vatican II, Pope John Paul II, or Pope Benedict XVI. Jim Bacik clarified the difference between Vatican II priests and JPII priests under two operative models of priesthood: servant/leader (inspired by Vatican II) or spiritual father (inspired by Pope John Paul II).

The servant/leader model tends to see a priest in terms of ministry shared with the laity, of witness to social justice issues, and of exploring how the Gospel is to be translated into today's world. The spiritual father model tends to see a priest in terms of directing the laity in their service to the Church, of piety in prayer, of maintaining orthodoxy.

In discussions, many members complained of the awkwardness of the Roman Missal translation, and acknowledged stumbling over some phrases and omitting others. Some thought the language harkened back to a theology of our "meriting" God's love rather than the theology of seeing God's grace and salvation as gift. Still other priests acknowledged an atmosphere of fear in the Church, priests fearing their bishops, and bishops fearing the Curia.

Some lamented the inability to communicate with the hierarchy without fear of reprisal, and others acknowledged the threat to their personal integrity and the anxiety of following one's conscience vis-a-vis Roman control and certain diocesan policies and practices. All seem eager to preserve the legacy of Vatican II. The regional meeting also surfaced the priests' love for their people and their deep appreciation of their role as presider at liturgy.

AUSCP Regional Meeting in Detroit on Feb 28, 2012

Fr. Bill Petron sent in a good summary report on the Detroit Gathering which garnered some 29 brothers. He said that Frank Eckart gave an update from the AUSCP leadership board and a good peek at plans for the summer assembly at St. Leo's in Florida.

Bishop Tom Gumbleton spoke about how Vatican II changed his ministry from focusing on "saving souls" to answering the call to promote social justice. The council documents called us to minister with an emphasis on collegiality and subsidiarity, particularly as it was modeled by Archbishop Deardon, who set the pace for USCCB conferences for years to come.

Jim Bacik focused on how the disciplines of spirituality can help us hold our "center" amidst the many stresses of ministry today. He invited us to keep the best of Vatican Council II alive by retrieving the best values of Gaudium et Spes and the other documents and not by letting nostalgia distract us.

The general discussion affirmed the gift of pastoral ministry that we share. Vatican II was and is a pastoral Council. Thus we need to focus as pastors on the development of our own distinct wisdom tradition, our own voice as an association, "to grow our own spine gradually."

A word from Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublinabpmartin

"Church authorities must learn to listen; but that listening is not to be equivocated simply with sounding-out public opinion. It requires above all listening intently and in common to the word of God and proclaiming that word and living it....

For too long the Church appeared in a role of moralization and people failed to transmit the real depth of the Christian message which is about Jesus as a person who in his life and teaching reveals to us who God is. God is a God of love with whom we can in Jesus enter into a personal relationship, which then brings richness to the way we live of our lives."

Vatican II Opening Prayerv2prayer

John XXIIIWe stand before you,
Holy Spirit,

conscious of our sinfulness,

but aware that we gather
in your name.

Come to us, remain with us,

and enlighten our hearts.

Give us light and strength

to know your will,

to make it our own,

and to live it in our lives.

Guide us by your wisdom,

support us by your power,

for you are God,

sharing the glory of Father and Son.

You desire justice for all;

enable us to uphold the rights of others;

do not allow us to be misled by ignorance

or corrupted by fear or favor.

Unite us to yourself in the bond of love

and keep us faithful to all that is true.

As we gather in your name,

may we temper justice with love,

so that all our discussions and reflections

may be pleasing to you,

and earn the reward promised to good

and faithful servants.

We ask this of You who live and reign
with the
Father and the Son, one God,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
