REDI Enterprises Society, in 1952, was the Medicine Hat Chapter of the Society for the Physically Handicapped. The objectives of the volunteer directors were to help give people with disabilities a life, starting with work, income, and a place in the community. REDI has been instrumental in creating lives for people. In 1955, with the assistance of volunteers, 4 individuals with physical disabilities operated their own businesses in the sheltered workshop. Over the next nearly sixty years, they continued to include people with a variety of disabilities and barriers as active participants in the everyday life of our community. Opportunities for inclusion became available to people who may have been institutionalized at a very young age, people who had never been given the opportunity for formal education or who, for any variety of reasons, had been discriminated against and forced into segregated environments.
