ORAM Client at First-Ever Refugee Congress
Danny DysonIn August, Danny Dyson -- a gay Ugandan man ORAM helped resettle in San Francisco earlier this year --  traveled to Washington, D.C., for the first-ever Refugee Congress, hosted by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

During his visit, Danny and Michael Sisitzky, ORAM's legal fellow in D.C., met with staffers for California Sens. Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein, and U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Danny recounted his persecution in Uganda, how he fled to Kenya, and his integration and resettlement in the U.S.

In describing his experience being resettled in San Francisco, Danny said, "I looked up and saw two flags: an American flag and a rainbow flag. And around me there was a lesbian couple holding hands, and gay men kissing, and straight families walking by with their children--all in the same place. And I just felt like I belonged." Read more about Danny's journey in the Silicon Valley Mercury News.

In San Francisco? Help Us Resettle Refugees!
House a Refugee or Build a Network for Support
San FranciscoORAM is looking to the community in San Francisco to help lead our efforts to resettle newly arrived LGBTI refugees.

Since early 2011, we have resettled two refugees in San Francisco, and more are expected to arrive by the end of the year and in early 2012. These refugees are coming to the U.S. faster than expected, thanks to the success of our advocacy (read about our latest report below).

Our New Report on Turkey Shows Improvement
Unsafe Haven In August, we released an updated report on the conditions of LGBTI refugees in Turkey, which shows improvements in the asylum process thanks largely to ORAM's advocacy.

However, our report also details increased violence against LGBTI people, and urges action from Turkish authorities and international NGOs. Read a press release here. Download the report here.
