uPDATESAugust 30 Updates
1) Moodle is now stable and should continue to improve over the next few days. Teachers are reaching out to students to support them in this new environment.  Students will NOT be penalized for any course down time.   Courses in Blackboard were not affected by these issues.

2) The registration system is functionally much better now.  Schools can add and drop students and run grade, no-show, and enrollment reports. The system should continue to better stabilize over the next few days.

3) Schools can ADD students through Monday, September 10, which is our Day 10.  If there's no waitlist, students will go right into the course.

4)  For courses at capacity that have waitlists (see the list below), we will continue to add to those courses through Monday, September 10, as enrolled students drop, but no new sections will be opened.  It is advised to have an alternate choice of courses for any student waitlisted for the courses that have reached enrollment capacity.

5) On Tuesday, September 11, we will start an emergency add list for SENIORS who need the course to graduate and also for medical hardships. Emergency adds will run from September 11 to September 13. More directions will be coming for the emergency add process.

6) On Tuesday, September 11, we will start looking at transfer students. Transfer students must have spent seat time with a face-to-face instructor and have a grade to transfer in with.  Transfers are not for students new to the course.
DropDropping Students
This link shows how to drop students.

You may drop students up to the tenth day of the class, which is Monday, September 10.  After Day 10, you may withdraw students throughout the semester, but the enrollment will still count in your allotment totals.
CapacityCourses at Capacity
The following courses are at capacity.  No new sections will be opened for these courses.  Students on the waitlist in those courses will still be added, though, as enrolled students drop.  We will continue to add in this manner through Monday, September 10, which is our Day 10. A suggestion for students on the waitlists in courses at capacity is to enroll those on the block schedule, in the Spring 2013 semester. You should also have a plan to either accommodate these waitlisted students in another course at your school or in another NCVPS course.

PasswordStudent Password Issues

If the student's password does not work or if the student can log in but sees no courses, go through the following steps:

1) Confirm that the student is enrolled and not waitlisted.

2) Make sure that the student is logging into the correct site.  Some courses are hosted in the Moodle platform and some are in Blackboard. Check the list here: http://www.ncvps.org/index.php/student-bb-logon/

3) If the student is recently enrolled, remember that passwords will not work for 24 hours.

4) If the student is confirmed enrolled and it has been at least 24 hours since enrollment, then have the student submit an online ticket with our Help Center here:

Click on "Open a New Ticket." The student or the E-learning Advisor can submit this ticket. Be sure to include the student's name, Wise number, email address, and course that the student can't access.

5) If a student's password stops working anytime during the semester, have the student submit an online ticket with the Help Center.

Budget

Summer 2012 enrollments are included in the fiscal year for 2012-2013.  When you are looking at your budget totals in the registration system, be aware that your Summer 2012, Fall 2012, and Spring 2013 enrollments are included in the top 2012-2013 budget line.

NCAAReporting NCVPS Classes on Transcripts for NCAA Clearing House

We have been working with NCAA to get clarification on how to better help students who are trying to get clearance.  The NCAA understands that NCVPS can't award the grade as we are not degree granting and that the NC public school awards the grades.

We have one solution to share with schools systems. It has been suggested that schools document the classes on the transcripts as such:

Algebra I - NCVPS

Algebra I CR-NCVPS - (for the credit recovery classes prior to Aug 2011) - they will not accept CR classes from Aug 11 forward since we are not longer providing a letter grade.

You can also list the course ID to show the semester, etc:

algebraIsec04spr11 - NCVPS

This example helps them to see what semester etc. this course was taken when they are doing their evaluation as well.

By doing this, it will help the NCAA to know this was an online class with NCVPS and that we do not award the grades. Please make sure you designate NCVPS over just ONLINE CLASS.
PilotPilot Course - Computer Science Principles

NCVPS has a course being piloted with DPI/CTE Division for the fall entitled, Computer Science Principles. The DPI/CTE Division is working to get honors credit for the course.  Students will be able to learn programming skills to develop games and apps for Smart Phones. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Here is the course description for the Computer Science Principles:

Discover the beauty and joy of computing! Take the new Computer Science Principles Honors course and learn how to program a computer and translate ideas into code using visual programming tools. This course emphasizes the main ideas of computing using SNAP, GameMaker, and App Inventor. Learn to create computer games and Android phone apps.

If you are interested in having your student(s) enrolled in Computer Science Principles for Fall 2012, all you need to do is contact Karen Creech at karen.creech@ncpublicschools.gov. The Computer Science Principles course is a pilot so it is not listed in the Registration System or in our course catalog.

We already have students enrolled and have enrollments available for 20 more students.

OCSTrainingOnline Training for All OCS Blended Learning Classroom Partner Teachers
OCS Blended Learning

The OCS Blended Learning team has updated the online training piece and is now ready for our OCS Blended Learning partner teachers! Here is the link to the training:  http://www.ncvps.org/index.php/courses/ocs-blended/

This page has awesome information for all stakeholders involved in the OCS Blended Learning program!  Please scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the TRAINING link for classroom OCS teachers.  It would be great if all teachers completed this training prior to August 27, 2012.  Even if teachers have partnered with NCVPS before in the OCS Blended Learning program, we ask all teachers to complete this training as we have added three new pieces!  There is also a new survey for teachers to complete.

Please email Michelle Lourcey (michelle.lourcey@ncpublicschools.gov) with any questions!
