Wellness Matters

Dear Everett School Colleagues

I hope this March Wellness Matters newsletter finds you WELL.

Clover

I am pleased to say that in February I delivered 328 debit cards to staff who earned an incentive in last years Wellness Challenge. It was a lot of fun for me to hear how folks were using their incentive dollars. One staff member told me she was able to turn her $200 in to $250 by purchasing Loews gift cards at Safeway (earned her 5%) which earned her nearly $30 in gas credits, and then made a purchase at Loews (which also earned her 5%). Now that's smart shopping! Congratulations to all of you who earned your incentives.

The IRONMAN Challenge was a great success with over 150 participants. 100 people completed the challenge on their own and most of the others completed it as part of a team. I heard lots of success stories and it seems that many who participated are hoping we'll do it again next year. We WILL! Great work and congratulations to all the IRONMAN finishers.

 Nutrition Heart

March is National Nutrition Month!  Over 200 district employees are participating in the 2nd annual 31-Day EAT SMART Nutrition Challenge. It's not too late to join the challenge. Join US!!!

Online Personal TrainersOnline Personal Trainer

Once thought to be the exclusive domain of the rich and famous, personal trainers have become increasingly popular among the general public. Today, personal trainers are riding the dot-com wave, making their services more accessible and affordable than ever. Despite the obvious benefits of online training, cyber-training is most effective as a supplement to working one-on-one with a qualified trainer.

Getting Fat but Staying Fit.

For years, scientists and the news media have been debating the relative risks of being fat but fit. The study suggests that  "So much attention gets focused on weight reduction, but reducing body fat is very difficult for most people. Our study suggests that," in terms of heart health, "maintaining your fitness over your lifetime is just as important, and for most people is probably more achievable."  Read More.

The Everett School Employee Wellness Program offers you many opportunities to increase your physical activity.  Take one of our many fitness classes...yoga, Zumba, Cycling, Total Body Conditioning or Women with Weights.

9 Foods to Help you Sleep

Some people have trouble falling asleep. Others can't stay asleep. And then there are the people who have trouble turning life "off" and tucking into bed at a reasonable hour.

Whatever the reason, we're not alone-more than 50 million Americans don't get enough shut-eye. Yet the health benefits of a good night's rest are countless: sleep helps keep you happy, your brain sharp, your immune system strong, your waistline trim, your skin looking youthful-and lowers your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

Here's the good news: Adding these foods to your diet may help to increase your odds of a successful slumber. Read More.

12 Secrets to Spending Less at the GGrocery Bagrocery Store
Save money with some easy planning for shopping and cooking. The first step to saving money is to avo
id waste. Americans throw out more than 25 percent of the food we prepare, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. That means we need to do a better job of using leftovers, learn what to do with food when it's past its peak and most of all get organized. Here are some easy steps to take.

Why Gardening is

Good for your Health

A recent study in the Netherlands suggests that gardening can fight stress even better than other relaxing leisure activities.

After completing a stressful task, two groups of people were instructed to either read indoors or garden for 30 minutes. Afterward, the group that gardened reported being in a better mood than the reading group, and they also had

lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.   Learn More.
