Move More
Weight gain between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day is a big concern for most Americans, but why does this happen? For many, life is hectic during the holiday season, stress levels are high, and there doesn't seem to be enough time. There are so many things to do: planning, shopping, parties, traveling, you name it. This time creates opportunities to have "perfect" excuses to stop exercising and managing our diet. William Connor, M.D., professor of medicine at OHSU School of Medicine, observes: "The overall clinical impression is that people, after the holidays, weigh more than before because of feasting and lack of physical activity." Eat Smart
Vegetarian Thanksgiving
For those who follow a vegetarian diet and are not inspired by the thought of "Tofurkey"....take the meaty bird off the table and make room for a spectacular array of vegetarian soups, sides, main courses, salads and dessert recipes from the NY Times. Get ready to save a turkey and savor the flavors of your most creative Thanksgiving ever.
If Thanksgiving usually has you secretly loosening your belt before the pumpkin pie is served, you're in good company. The average American consumes a whopping 3,500 calories with this dinner alone. While this article does not suggest that you diet on turkey day, wouldn't it be nice if, just once, this tradition-blessed binge didn't send your resolve spiraling down -- and your weight soaring up -- for the rest of the holidays? Read this article to learn how you can indulge in every course without breaking the 1,000-calorie barrier. These tips also help to prevent the food coma at the end of the day.
The Longfellow Wellness Team is hosting a "Turkey Trot". Each floor is providing HEALTHY snacks. Staff will "trot" up and down throughout the building mingling while eating healthy snacks. Great job Longfellow Wellness Team.
