Celiac disorder effects reproduction
|
 | When Bread Hurts |
Estrogen levels are generally lower in women with gluten allergy Celiac disease is a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are important for staying healthy. The damage is due to a reaction to eating gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye, and possibly oats. A recent study showed that women with untreated celiac disease may go through menopause earlier, and have a higher risk of some pregnancy complications, than women without the disease, suggests a small study. Celiac disease is often under-diagnosed and untreated. When patients
with celiac disease are diagnosed early, and follow a strict diet as treatment, the findings of the study suggest women won't go through menopause any earlier than disease-free women. Symptoms of celiac disease are: Because the intestines do not absorb many important vitamins, minerals, and other parts of food, the following symptoms may start over time: -
Bruising easily
-
Depression or anxiety
-
Fatigue
-
Growth delay in children
-
Hair loss
-
Itchy skin (dermatitis herpetiformis)
-
Missed menstrual periods
-
Mouth ulcers
-
Muscle cramps and joint pain
-
Nosebleeds
-
Seizures
-
Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
-
Unexplained short height
Evaluation for celiac disease and other food allergies are important to many different systems in the body. Testing is initiated using blood labs to evaluate antibodies to allergens.
As a Mom of a wheat-free child, I can share many tips, recipes and brand names of products we've tasted, tossed or kept! Let us know if you need some resources or would like to be evaluated.
