SMP Students to Perform with Marian Anderson String Quartet

SMP's string students from Bailey Gatzert Elementary School will perform alongside the Marian Anderson String Quartet for a special Night of Strings at Meany Hall on May 18th. Hosted by our partners at the U.W. World Series, the performance will be the culmination of a two-week residency by the ensemble.

The Marian Anderson String Quartet is a world-renowned African American ensemble who specialize in educational outreach to create new and diverse audiences for chamber music.

This year's residency marks the return of the MASQ to Seattle and has included hands-on sessions with string students, school assemblies, concerts for families and community members and even a petting zoo for younger children.

The upcoming
Night of Strings promises to be a night our students will remember forever as they perform side-by-side with professional touring musicians on the big stage!

The concert begins at 6:30 PM and is free and open to the public. Please join us in celebrating this milestone with our students!

SMP Featured in New Exhibit by Local Artist

treemonisha exhibit

Rosaleen Rhee's new traveling exhibit,Treemonisha: Celebrating African Americans in Classical Music,

opens tomorrow, April 27th, at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center in conjunction with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra's free community concert (exhibit opens at 6:00 p.m.).

Treemonisha includes elements that illustrate the lives and works of past African American musicians, as well as audiovisual displays that include interviews with some of Seattle's most accomplished performers.

SMP is honored to be included as part of the exhibit for our work with young people of color.  Several members of the SMP community are featured in the audiovisual portion of the exhibit, including students, volunteers and a member of our Board of Directors.

The exhibit will also be on display on May 18th at the Night of Strings performance at Meany Hall on the University of Washington campus (reception starts at 6 p.m.). Please see accompanying article.

Rosaleen studied music at Brown University and will soon finish her degree in Museology at U.W. Her passion for both fields motivated her to create a community music project. "I am so grateful for SMP's support. The work they do brings children new opportunities, new friends, a creative outlet and so much joy in their lives. All children deserve these things, and folks at SMP make it happen."

We are thrilled to be included and hope that many of you will be able to join us for the first showings of the exhibit!

give big

giveBIG on May 2nd!

Seattle Music Partners is excited to be a part of The Seattle Foundation's giveBIG event again this year.  If you donate through the Seattle Music Partners giveBIG profile on May 2nd, a percentage of your donation will be matched by local businesses.

Why giveBIG?

As a long-time supporter of SMP, you are aware of our mission to provide underserved youth with the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument and become musically literate.

The value of our work was recently reaffirmed in the March 2012 NEA study entitled The Arts and Achievement in At-Risk Youth that shows that students who have access to the arts in or out of school do better academically and become more active and engaged citizens. These results are particularly true within low SES (socioeconomic) groups.

Help us sustain this important work by participating in the giveBIG event on May 2nd.

Thank you for supporting tomorrow's musician today!
