Bridging through Music:
from Elementary to Middle
SMP String Ensemble
The transition to middle school can be an exciting and sometimes intimidating experience. As 5th graders gear up for the move from elementary to middle school next fall, music can be a reassuring presence and a way of making friends with similar interests.

SMP has been working with the band and orchestra directors at Washington Middle School to help familiarize 5th grade students and their families with the myriad opportunities available in the music department, which boasts 10 daily classes.  Last month, SMP organized field trips for the 5th grade students from two of our partner schools to visit a middle school band and orchestra rehearsal in action and to ask questions of the teachers and older students.  We also organized an evening meeting where over 30 of our 5th grade students and family members took part in a discussion about Washington Middle School's music program. Families and students from different schools had the opportunity to meet each other and to hear from the WMS band director, current middle school music students and their parents. SMP looks forward to continuing to support these students in music through their middle school years.

Special Family Performance by the Harlem String Quartet

We are excited to announce that, as part of our continuing outreach efforts, the nationally acclaimed Harlem String Quartet will be holding a special concert in April for SMP students and their families.  The Harlem String Quartet, praised for its 'panache' by The New York Times, will be meeting with our after-school students for a hands-on mini master class, followed by a performance for our students and families.  The quartet has been heralded for its mission to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire, highlighting works by minority composers. Thanks to the University of Washington World Series for their continued partnership and for making this event possible!

El Sistema USA Fellow visits SMP

For over thirty years, a remarkable music-education project has been transforming the lives of children in Venezuela. That program is El Sistema, which now includes over 300,000 low-income children who play music in orchestras across Venezuela. El Sistema has a new counterpart in the United States called El Sistema USA. Stanford Thompson, one of El Sistema USA's first "fellows," recently spent a week with Seattle Music Partners, where he sat in on lessons and spoke with tutors and staff about his work as head of a new after-school music-education program he launched and directs in West Philadelphia called Tune Up Philly. "I had a great time visiting SMP and am impressed with the work you do," Stan shared.  "It is clear in the faces, enthusiasm and accomplishments of the students and volunteers alike that they take great pride in what they are learning." Stan and we look forward to continuing to share ideas about our respective programs and the further development of El Sistema USA! Selah in Orchestra Room
SMP Student Spotlight:
Selah Truth
Selah has been a part of SMP's after-school music program since her first musical ventures in 3rd grade at T.T. Minor Elementary School. Now, Selah is in the 7th grade and participating in music everyday at Washington Middle School in addition to her time after school with us once a week.  She "wowed" us with her beautiful clarinet tone at the February SMP Recital and we stopped to chat with Selah and find out what keeps her playing music.

What do you like about your instrument?

Selah: I like the challenge and showing off that I can play.  The clarinet is cool because it can change ranges and play trills, but you have to get your mouth into different positions to play the notes.

What else do you do outside of music?

Selah: I  just started volleyball, but I don't like diving.  Mostly, music is my thing.  I like to listen to different types of music from different countries.

Why do you keep playing music?

Selah: I'm in Jr. Band now at WMS and I want to be the section leader of Senior Band next year.  I was a very emotional and kind of aggressive person before I started playing music.  Now it makes me feel better when I play.

Go for it, Selah!

Communities Rally in Support of SMP

Recently, a number of local businesses and individuals organized events in support of SMP with terrific results!  In addition to building awareness about our work, these events helped raise needed funds to support ongoing programming.  Heartfelt thanks to:  BIG Seattle (Residential Design, Lake & Co. Real Estate, Kwanchai Design Group, Cobalt Mortgage and Rogers & Norman), Peaks Frozen Custard and Ryan Fang.

Next up: A benefit concert in May organized by a group of Ballard and Roosevelt High School Seniors featuring Seattle hip-hop artists, Dyme Def.

If you are interested in holding an event to support SMP, we'd love to work with you!  Please contact scott@seattlemusicpartners.org.
