A one-stop office for filmmakers, the Commission supports productions of all sizes and budgets. In addition to managing the Film & Television Tax Credit program, services include an extensive digital location library, free online permitting, low cost use of state properties as shooting locations, and production assistance.

Legislative Update:
CA Film & TV Tax Credit Program Extended Through 2015
 Assembly Bill 1069 was signed into law on October 9th by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. to extend California's Film & Television Tax Credit Program through fiscal 2014-2015. The one-year, $100 million extension provides added continuity and certainty to a program that has proved very successful.
Since it was enacted in 2009, the program has served as an effective tool in the fight against "runaway production," helping keep scores of projects and tens of thousands of jobs in California.
The Program is fully subscribed for the current 2011-12 fiscal year. Applications for the next fiscal year's $100 million tax credit allocation will be accepted starting June 1, 2012.

State Employees Honored at Annual California On-Location Awards
The 17th Annual California On-Location Awards (COLAs) were presented October 16th to honor excellence in on-location film, television and commercial production in the Golden State. The lavish ceremony held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles included California Film Commission Executive Director Amy Lemisch, who was on hand to present awards in the Public Employee category.

took home the COLA for State Public Employee of the Year. Steve was honored for his professionalism and willingness to always go the extra mile. For the past 23 years, he has served as film coordinator for a district that includes Santa Barbara, Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties, and is home to often-filmed locations such as Highway 1 and Bixby Bridge.

will retire next Spring. Since joining the Fire Marshal's Motion Picture &
Entertainment Unit in 1995, Al has made it easier for an untold number of productions to shoot in California while always protecting public safety and our state's natural resources.
During her presentation (which caught Al completely off-guard), Amy declared, "Al has been a guide, a resource and a friend to many of us in this room."
The COLAs are a project of Film Liaisons in California Statewide (FLICS) - a network of regional film commissions that work cooperatively with the California Film Commission to promote and facilitate filming in-state. CHP Lowers Fees
No... the headline above is not a misprint.

The California Highway Patrol has lowered the hourly rate it charges for officers assigned to handle film safety and traffic control.
Effective September 16th, the new hourly fee is $66.30 per hour for each officer, down from the prior rate of $75.64. That's a reduction of more than 12%!

San Francisco Expands Production Rebate Program

The City of San Francisco recently expanded its Scene in San Francisco Rebate Program to include reality TV and feature-length documentary production.
The Program offers a refund up to $600,000 on fees paid to the City for everything from permits and payroll taxes to street closures, police officers and use of City-owned locations. For a project to qualify, it must shoot a minimum of 55% to 65% (depending on budget) of its principal photography in San Francisco.
In related legislation, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors also voted to lower permit fees for films with budgets less than $500,000. Such cost savings are in addition to the City's Vendor Discount Program, which offers all productions a substantial discount on select hotels, airfare, car rentals, restaurants and other vendor services.

Moneyball Shines Spotlight on East Bay Production
It's not often that Oakland hosts production for a big-budget feature film starring one of the world's most popular movie stars... but when it does, the positive impact on the community can be substantial.
 Such was the case with Moneyball, which was a recipient of tax credits provided by California's production incentive. As a result, the film was shot almost entirely in-state.
The production schedule included a total of 20 days in Oakland (15 for prep/wrap and 5 for shooting). During that period, the production hired more than 2,000 local people each day. It also purchased 1,500 local hotel room days, more than $200,000 in catering / groceries, nearly $430,000 in location fees, $660,000 in local wages and $170,000 in local rentals, government fees, etc.

The former Tuolumne General Hospital in Sonora (about an hour east of Modesto) is available for production until late May 2012. The three-story building has a classic brick-and-ivy exterior, and includes an emergency room, patient/operating rooms, nurses station and psychiatric ward complete with padded walls. Parking is extensive, and access is easy from Highway 108. Perhaps best of all, this county facility is available as a no-fee location!
