national Day of Prayer 

Students on the Calvary Campus met at Calvary Baptist Church in the evening to present their National Day of Prayer Program.  They sang songs, prayed for our nation, quoted Scripture and blessed the audience with their energy and their love for Jesus.

The Opelousas Preschool students observed the 2012 National Day of Prayer with singing, Scripture, recitation of quotes and prayer on the steps of the courthouse in downtown Opelousas.

 

The Opelousas Elementary observed the 2012 National Day of Prayer on May 3 with singing of hymns, reciting of significant quotes, and praying for godly peace and direction for our country, state, and local leaders.  The most appropriate quote came from Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States: "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.  We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream.  It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."  But, the greatest blessing came from the simple and sincere prayers of selected children from grades one through six.  May Father God hear!    

 

For the Upper School National Day of Prayer Program Myra Baker explained the history of the National Day of Prayer and the importance of personal prayer.  Anna Beth Arias prayed for soldiers and their families, Lynzi Glasscock prayed for the President and his family, Harlie Kennerson prayed for government, Cassidy Sims prayed for schools, Matt Standiford prayed for churches, and Monique Claiborne prayed for WCA.

On the Lafayette Campus Sergeant Josh Mayers was the guest speaker at both the preschool and elementary programs. He spoke to the students and parents about the power of their prayers. He told them about the dangers he faced in Afghanistan and how he knows the prayers of the students are what kept him safe. The students sang songs and recited quotes from past presidents. The 5th & 6th graders did skits and played a song on their recorders.

Carolina Creek Christian Camp - Huntsville, Texa
 

 

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.  Deuteronomy 6:5-9

 
WCA 7th graders spent 3 days on a "High Energy, Team Building, God Focused" adventure at the Carolina Christian Creek Camp where camp leaders focused on this scripture.  The kids had an exciting time.  "Thank you" to all the parents and teachers who made this adventure possible.

A Day In the Classroom with...
Mrs. Doucet's English II Class

The students were assigned a theme from Grapes of Wrath. Each group then had to research its theme, explain it, give examples from the novel, and prepare a visual and a presentation on their theme to be presented to the class.

The themes were:
1. Dignity of wrath in the face of injustice
2. The saving power of family and friendship
3. Man's inhumanity to man
4. The multiplying effects of altruism and selfishness
5. The economic theory of socialism

A Day Out of the Classroom with...  

Mrs. Salling's Geometry Class  

Each year, Mrs. Salling's Geometry Class does a "Flip that House' project.  They "purchase" a home, develop a blueprint for renovation and take a trip to Lowe's to develop their budgets.  The end result goal is to make renovations and sell for a profit.  What a great "Real Life" experience!

6th Grade Social Studies Fair Winner
Opelousas Campus

John Robert Thibodeaux, II became a Social Studies Fair State Finalist with his "Mardi-Gras/Cajun Style" project.   His journey of success began as he placed 1st at WCA, followed by 1st place in Parish at LSU-E and finally 1st place in Regionals at the Cajundome in Lafayette.

Maxwell the Bearded Dragon Visits the
Lafayette Campus
Even the pets love to read at the Lafayette Campus! Maxwell is the bearded dragon that lives in the library. His hobbies include taking walks around campus and basking in a good book.

Hamburger Sale
Opelousas Campus
The Lady Crusader Volleyball Team will be selling hamburger lunches on May 22nd for field day at the Opelousas Campus.  Cost is $5.  Order forms & payments need to be sent back by May 17th.
 
Scholastic Reading Counts (SRC)
Opelousas Campus Challenge
Each year, the libraries at both campuses help the elementary students meet their requirement of reading one book and passing one SRC quiz each quarter.  Both librarians also find ways to encourage students to read above and beyond that requirement of only one book per quarter.  Here at the Opelousas campus, the librarian gives various prizes when students meet certain reading goals.  When students pass five SRC quizzes, they receive a bookmark.  When students pass ten SRC quizzes, they may check out one extra book for a week.  When students pass fifteen SRC quizzes, they may choose one book to keep from extra books that are stored in the librarian's closet and their name is entered in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to a bookstore.  When students pass twenty quizzes, they are able to go to the preschool and read a book to a classroom of their choice.  All of the students look forward to the prizes, but they really enjoy sharing their gift of reading to their former teachers and younger students, esp. those who have brothers and/or sisters.  This year, we had about 225 students in the Opelousas elementary, and they took 3,797 quizzes so far!  We are so proud of each and every one of these students for working hard at achieving the various goals that we have placed upon them and they have placed upon themselves.  We also want to thank the teachers in the elementary department who continuously encouraged their students to read.  Thank you for championing this great gift and life skill.  The students couldn't have accomplished their goals without you.

3rd Grade Artists In the Making
Lafayette Campus

The third grade class was blessed to have guest artist, Mattie Calais, present a lesson on color and perception. The students were taught how to make a circle look like a ball. Mrs. Calais is the grandmother of third grader, Anjolie Head, and K-4 student, Garrett Head.

'Cranky Ole Jalopy' Laid to Rest

  

We have been blessed over the years with a pick-up that has been used from small to really big jobs around campus.  That ole truck breathed its last bit of gasoline and we had to put her down.  If any of you have a truck that can be donated or purchased, please contact Coach Thompson at 337.945.9046.

Mandatory Superintendent's Meeting
June 12th
For new students who entered WCA this year and whose parents did not attend a Superintendent's meeting, those parents must attend one of the two offered  in order for their child to start school on the first day this fall.  This meeting is required for parents of all new students to WCA. For those of you who began after the final superintendents meeting for 2011-2012, two dates have been put on the calendar for these meetings. Please register for either in order to be eligible for the start of the 2012-2013 school year.  You can register at www.wcala.org/news-and-events.

TOPS Notification

TOPS Notifications will be issued the third week of July. The state legislature meets to fund the next year for the state scholarship program.  The letter will come from the state when the students final grades, ACT scores and FAFSA are all matched.
