VOLUME 3, ISSUE 32                                                            May 4, 2012

From Our Superintendent, Merida Brooks

footwashing4It is difficult to comprehend that the 2011-2012 school year is rapidly coming to a close with Friday being the last day for the Class of 2012! At the recent Senior Foot Washing Ceremony several faculty and administrators privately and literally washed the feet of every Westminster senior. This was the culmination of years of personal and institutional investment into their lives. Words of truth, challenge, encouragement and value were spoken to each individual young lady and young man. Each were prayed for and once again committed into the hands of their Heavenly Father and all that He has planned for them. This is one of Westminster's most holy and sacred events reserved as a final investment and parting, as it were, for our seniors some of whom we have known for 15 years.

It has been Westminster's privilege to assist parents in packing the seniors' "life's suitcases." As the final items are being placed in their "bags,"

  • May we remain faithful in these few last days to the stewardship God has granted to us in teaching and equipping them to stand in a world that will not give them a hug when they fall.
  • May we realize that once they leave home it will be up to them to open those "bags" and use the tools placed there by there by parents, teachers, administrators, coaches, and others.
  • May they cry out to their Heavenly Father knowing, "If God be for me, who can be against me." Romans 8:31
  • May they know Him as the true and living God Who sits watch over their lives to care, provide and deliver them from the evil one who desires to "steal, kill and destroy" them.
  • May they know, and may we know, that it is Father God who will bear their burdens and carry them day by day. Psalm 68:19

A Day in a WCA Classroom...

Mrs. Mill's Kindergarten "Flat " Child Project

Each child makes a flat version of themselves at the beginning of school.  The "Flat Child" is taken on various trips and sends pictures and letters telling where they have visited.  While many "Flat Children" have had adventures this year (and past years) including hunting trips, Saints Super Bowl Victory, the Houston Ballet and of course, DisneyWorld.   Gabrielle Scott's dad, Ted Scott, PGA Caddie for Bubba Watson, took "Flat Gabrielle" to the Masters. "Flat Gabrielle" could be seen in many different places, on shoulders of caddies, in golf bags and on the special Ben Hogan Bridge at the Amen Corner.  She was there when "Mr. Bubba" won the Masters!  Bubba Watson and Ted are both Christians and share their faith on tour.  What an honor to have one of our very own WCA parents have such a wonderful experience and bring that experience back to our classrooms!    Flat Gabrielle

5th Graders to the Big Easy
Aquarium, IMAX, Insectarium and World War II Museum

The Lafayette and Opelousas Elementary's Fifth Grade experienced delightful days on Thursday, April 26th and Friday, April 27, on a trek by Calco bus to New Orleans.  There, the groups toured the Aquarium of the Americas, had a picnic on the Riverwalk.  In addition, the Lafayette Campus enjoyed the Insectarium while the Opelousas students visited  the World War II Museum.   Thank you to all the teachers and parents who worked to make this a seamless, memory-making event for our kids.

7th Grade Duke TIP Program Participants

Duke TIP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving academically gifted and talented students. Duke TIP works with students, their families, and educators to identify, recognize, challenge, engage, and help students reach their highest potential. Now in its 32nd year, the 7th Grade Talent Search identifies bright seventh graders based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school. Candidates are invited to take the ACT or the SAT college entrance exams as seventh graders, which allows them greater insight into their academic abilities. In addition, they gain valuable benefits and have access to unique resources for gifted students.

Ten seventh graders, of seventeen who tested, qualified for state recognition with Duke TIP ACT testing: Moriah Brooks, Ivy Cains, Jenna Courville, Jennifer Johnson, Timothy Kemp, Shelby Myers, Courtlin Naquin, Amy Riley, Avery Rust, and Ian Vinet.

Way to go, seventh grade scholars!!

Kindergarten Pioneer Day

Lafayette Campus

Pioneer Day is the end of the year celebration for Kindergarten students as they journey to the "Elementary Frontier". With students, faculty and volunteers all dressed in period attire, life on the frontier came to life for the students as they experienced hands on activities: panning for gold, soap making, crafts, horse-shoes, three-legged race, horse and buggy ride, and a good old fashion picnic.

Truck Needed

'Cranky Ole Jalopy' Laid to Rest

We have been blessed over the years with a pick-up that has been used from small to really big jobs around campus.  That ole truck breathed its last bit of gasoline and we had to put her down.  If any of you have a truck that can be donated or purchased, please contact Coach Thompson at 337.945.9046.

Mandatory Superintendent's Meeting
May 8th or June 12th
For new students who entered WCA this year and whose parents did not attend a Superintendent's meeting, those parents must attend one of the two offered  in order for their child to start school on the first day this fall.  This meeting is required for parents of all new students to WCA. For those of you who began after the final superintendents meeting for 2011-2012, two dates have been put on the calendar for these meetings. Please register for either in order to be eligible for the start of the 2012-2013 school year.  You can register at www.wcala.org/news-and-events.

Crusader Sports Beat...
Go Saders!

A note from Coach Badon
With the conclusion of baseball, softball, track and golf, the athletic department can proudly announce that for the first time in the school's history in the LHSAA, every team competing for the school either made the playoffs (in those sports that have them), or qualified for state competition in those sports that qualify directly (cross country, golf, track). What a tremendous achievement. Players, coaches, parents and supporters should all be commended for a job well done. Congrats!!

Softball

The Lady Crusaders  girls softball team reached the State Tournament last weekend for the first time in six years before falling 6-1 to eventual state champion Hannan in the quarterfinals. Nonetheless, the girls did an outstanding job this season competing in one of the toughest districts in the state.

Baseball

Baseball won its first round playoff game last week 8-1 over St. Frederick's in Monroe, but lost 11-1 this week to No. 1 seed Ouachita Christian in the second round.

Track

The girls and boys track teams are headed for the State 1A Meet in Baton Rouge this week, with the girls bringing nine events to the meet and the boys four. Action will conclude Thursday night at LSU.

Golf

The Golf team finished fifth at the state meet.  Eighth grader Jack Tolson finished third in the medalist race, recording a 73-74=147 score for the two-day competition. Jack won a sudden death playoff for third by making a 12-foot putt for birdie on the first extra hole. It was the highest finish ever for a WCA golfer at the state competition. Congratulations Jack!
