VOLUME 3, ISSUE 16                                                        December 9, 2011

From Our Superintendent, Merida Brooks

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: Behold a virgin
will be with child and bear a son, and he will

call His name Immanuel."

Isaiah 7:14

"The people who walk in darkness will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to
uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore.  The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this."
Isaiah 9:2,6 - 7

"Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,
And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him,
The spirit of counsel and strength,
The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And He will delight in the fear of the Lord,
And He will not judge by what His eyes see,
Nor make decisions by what His ears hear..."
Isaiah 11:1 - 3

Coming Soon
Online Re-enrollment is Coming to WCA!

In the coming weeks the Admissions Department will be sending out information regarding the specifics of our exciting announcement - online enrollment and re-enrollment is coming to Westminster! Online re-enrollment will begin January 17th.  Information, instructions and Help Days will be sent out soon! Please plan to re-enroll in the month of January. There is increased interest in Westminster as the school of choice for many in our communities (because of YOUR faithfulness to tell others about what WCA has to offer). Therefore, we are receiving new applications weekly. The Admissions Office will begin processing these new applications on February 1st. We give our current WCA Families the weeks in January to re-enroll their student(s) and to secure a spot in the classroom for the 2012-2013 school year, and to take advantage of the reduced re-enrollment fee of $100 in the month of January.

Egg Drop Experiment
4th Grade students at the Opelousas Campus participated in a science experiment called "The Egg Drop".  Students chose materials they thought would absorb energy and thus protect the egg when it was dropped.  Watch the video below to learn about the energy involved in this project!

Opelousas 4th Grade Field Trip
Mrs. Aymond's and Miss Zomer's 4th grade students participated in a field trip to Le Vieux Village and the Orphan Train Museum. This field trip was an added bonus to jump start students as they begin their research for the Louisiana Notebook Project due next semester. Students listened in wonder as Mr. Dupre recited the history of the Orphan Train.

The Legend of the Candy Cane
Each year the Opelousas Preschool reads and celebrates the Legend of the Candy Cane. Students enjoyed making candy cane Scripture scrolls, coloring candy canes, and learning math concepts using candy canes. The Legend of the Candy Cane is a book about a candy maker who wanted to create a candy, that could be used to tell others about Jesus.

"Jesus, Gentle Shepherd, this cane of red and white proclaims the sweet love story born on Christmas night. This cane, You see, when turned around begins Your name of love and now becomes a symbol of peace proclaimed above. The lively peppermint flavor is the regal gift of spice. The white is Your purity and the red Your sacrifice. And so this cane reminds us of just how much You care, and like Your Christmas Gift to us, it is meant for all to share."

Crusader Concert Choir Blesses Nursing Home
The WCA Concert Choir blessed the residents at Senior Village Nursing Home through the singing of Christmas carols, the sharing of Christmas cards, and time spent visiting with the residents.

Shoppe de Noel Ministers to Many
The residents of Senior Village Nursing Home were blessed by WCA students who participated in Shoppe de Noel, but the real blessing fell upon our students and faculty as they watched these precious senior citizens as their faces lit up with happiness.  They lined up an hour early as they eagerly awaited the opening of the event.  Students patiently assisted them as they picked out Christmas gifts.  The gifts were wrapped.  Students escorted the residents back to their rooms and delivered their packages to their rooms.  The WCA Choir strolled the halls under the direction of Mr. Stuart Amidon and blessed the Senior Village Nursing Home Family with Christmas carols.  Play the slideshow below!

National Reading Day - Opelousas Preschool

Social Studies Fair
The Opelousas Elementary Sixth Grade Social Studies Fair took place on Tuesday, December 6, in the Conference Room of the Gym.  Judges were: former High School Principal Dennis Chadeayne, former Third Grade Teacher Jana Chautin (a history major), and High School Teacher and Author Stuart Salling.  Students chose from a variety of categories including Geography, History, and Political Science. Each wrote a research paper, created a display and project model. Students presented a speech detailing their project to the judges. First through third place winners will represent WCA in the St. Landry Parish Social Studies Fair on February 4, 2012. The overall winner for the event was Taylor Fruge with her project entitled "Terra-cotta Warriors in Xian, China." Lafayette K3 Dress Up Day

Mrs. Mayers K3 class recently dressed-up like mommies and daddies. They each took a turn picking out what they wanted to wear from the dress-up box. They were everything from chefs to dentists.  What do you want to be when you grow up?

Lords and Ladies - Lafayette Campus
5th grade students on the Lafayette Campus had the opportunity to enhance their reading through "The Door in the Wall" by Marguerite deAngeli. The students were given the option to dress in medieval period attire for Lords and Ladies Day. They also shared stew (pease porridge) in bread bowls (trenchers) for lunch.
