From Our Superintendent, Merida Brooks

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!  Psalm 133:1

What joy and delight to have the Lafayette and Opelousas Campuses' Sixth Graders, along with their parents, come together for Middle School Preview Day on Thursday, December 1st. Other prospective parents also joined us for the Red Carpet Event! Presentations by Administrators, students and student groups were punctuated by an entertaining skit by Thomas Kemp and Nick Waguespack as Conrad and Godfrey on "What You Need to Know About Middle School." Parents enjoyed a private lunch reception giving them an opportunity to visit with Administrators and to have their questions answered about this very important transition in their student's lives. What an exciting opportunity to remind us all of how God has blessed our school and what Westminster is able to offer students as they prepare for college and the transformation of our society!

Proverbs 17:6 Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.
Grandparent's Day Comes to the Opelousas Campus
Grandparents of our Opelousas Elementary Students in 1st through 4th grade came in record numbers as they were greeted by our faithful room moms who served them and showed our gratitude for our Grandparents! Mrs. Brooks shared the heart of Westminster in a few opening words and then the Grandparents were led to the classrooms of their grandchildren. The teachers demonstrated different aspects of the classroom and a day of instruction. The children recited Scripture, poetry and much more!

Generations Annual Fund Update
Thank you for your faithfulness and generosity toward Generations Annual Fund so far this year! Did you know that funds received toward Generations Annual Fund will go toward two great projects on the Lafayette and Opelousas Campuses? On the Opelousas Campus almost $6,000 has been received designated to go toward a new Elementary Playground. These funds will be added to the $25,000 already donated by Parents' Club over the last few years. An additional $19,000 is needed to complete this project. On the Lafayette Campus there has been a generous $25,000 match offered. $2,335 have been designated toward this match to install a new pavilion cover over the existing outdoor basketball court area. Lafayette Parents, we need your participation to meet the match! Finally, over $21,000 has also been received toward Generations Annual Fund in unrestricted gifts.  We remain grateful for your participation.

Coming Soon
Online Re-enrollment is Coming to WCA!

In the coming weeks the Admissions Department will be sending out information regarding the specifics of an exciting announcement - online enrollment and re-enrollment is coming to Westminster! Online re-enrollment will begin January 17th.  Information, instructions and help days will be sent out soon! Please plan to re-enroll in the month of January. There is increased interest in Westminster as the school of choice for many in our communities (because of YOUR faithfulness to tell others about what WCA has to offer). Therefore, we are receiving new applications weekly. The Admissions Office will begin processing these new applications on February 1st. We give our current WCA Families the weeks in January to re-enroll their student(s) and to secure a spot in the classroom for the 2012-2013 school year. Also remember there is a reduced re-enrollment fee of $100 in the month of January.

Sonic Night Raises Money for WCA Organizations
WCA's Family Sonic Drive-In Night Fund-raiser was a great success! All three organizations that participated as car hops raised close to $200 each. Overall sales that night were over $2000. 10% of that total will also be distributed equally among the 8th grade, Mission Team, and Cheerleaders. WCA expresses thanks to the participating organizations, their sponsors, parents, and all other individuals who participated.

Preschool Harvest Day
Opelousas K5 Students recently studied about "Farming". The Bible verse Genesis 8:22 came alive as everything from weather, equipment, crops, livestock and the daily life of farm living were explored. The children finished the theme study by dressing up as farmers and playing on a tractor provided by Mr. Tommy Hollier. Harvest Day

Jesus Cares
Jesus Cares
"Jesus Cares" is an annual ministry where every elementary class is assigned or chooses a family or project to bless for Christmas.  The families selected are often characterized by a loss of job, a disabled provider, a fire in the home, or the like.  The projects selected include a Haiti orphanage and a soldier gift project.   All are treated to an outpouring of love coming from students in each grade and classroom. Presents of clothing, food, toys, and money come in as our WCA families seek to pour out God's love on those hit by hard times.  Keep an eye on student packets for information specific to your student's class.  Truly, if Jesus were here, He would be behind it all!

Pennies
Penny Harvest
The Penny Harvest Program on both the Lafayette and Opelousas Campuses this year is aimed  at helping send High School Mission Team members to Peru this February.  Kicked off by Allen Myers and Mission Team students, our Penny Harvest began with elementary students putting just pennies in each classroom bucket.  The second week will find students putting silver, bills, and/or checks in their bucket.  Then, the third week is our week of "sabotage" when anything but pennies will be subtracted from the class' total.  This fun competition ends with three winners: the class with the best total after subtractions, the class with the best total after adding all collections, and ultimately, our Mission Team.  We love this fun project, realizing that some of our own young students may be heading on a mission trip of their own when they get to High School.  May the name of Jesus be lifted up!

Stone Soup
Mrs. Speyrer's Lafayette Campus K4 class made a special soup after reading the book "Stone Soup". The story was about two men traveling through a village. They knocked on every door asking for food, but no one had any food to spare. The two men sat at the town well telling the villagers there were two master chefs here who would love to make them a delicious soup.  One villager brought an iron pot out, so the two men boiled water and added a stone.  The two travelers told the villagers the soup sure would taste much better if any one had a small vegetable to share.  Eventually everyone brought a little something and before they knew it, they had a hearty soup.  Each student in my class brought something to add to the soup.  The students started out with a stone and ended up with a delicious soup for everyone to enjoy.  Everything is so much nicer when we all participate.

Cross Country Concludes
The WCA Cross Country Teams traveled to Natchitoches for the LHSAA State Championship in Mid-November. In the world of equalities, the Crusaders would have first chance to show the results of their hard work. With the wind blowing, and temperatures in the 80s, races were expected to be slower than a week before, but nobody told Cameron Falgoust that!  Cameron ran a personal best time of 17:58 to capture 7th place. He was followed by Joel Newsom in 19:10, Peter Schexnayder in 19:39, Landon Vidrine 21:35 and Kaleb Andrepont 21:36 to complete scoring for the Crusaders. Grant Robin finished in 22:26 while Eli Manuel posted a time of 22:40. The Crusaders placed 5th in Team scoring, the best team placement ever ! ! !

If you are old enough, you might recall the saying - "Anything you can do, I can do better"  - Remember that? Well...The Lady Crusaders took to the task. Victoria Olivier placed 5th with a season best time of 20:52. Brittany Smith crossed at 23:00. Brooke Thompson finished in 23:41. Kenzi Doss posted a time of 24:06. Krista Huddleston completed scoring for the Ladies with a time of 24:49. Hannah Reizsner finished with a time of 27:02, while Kalli Doss crossed at 29:16. When all the scores were tallied,  THE LADY SADERS FINISHED 4TH IN TEAM SCORING!

Congratulations, Teams, for a wonderful season!

Farewell to Football

The largest crowd in WCA stadium history was on hand last Friday night to watch the homestanding Crusaders take on the visiting Vermilion Catholic Eagles in a quarterfinal matchup between the two schools. Although WCA held its own against the No.2-ranked and heavily favored Eagles, in the end VC pulled away for a 41-28 win. The Crusaders led 7-6 at one point, and were within six at 27-21 late in the third quarter. But two key plays turned the game around, and the VC offense put the game away in the final minutes.

It was a tough loss for a senior class that ended the year as undefeated district champs and 10-3 overall. In their four-year career, this senior class helped the school achieve a 36-12 record, which included three consecutive district titles. The team has not lost a district contest in over three years, quite a testimony to a group of young men that exemplify what being a team is all about.
