VOLUME 3, ISSUE 11                                                            October 28, 2011

From Our Superintendent, Merida Brooks

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Romans 12:6-8

WCA has a long history of academic excellence, and, over the years, many of the school's athletes have achieved at a high level in the academic arena. But this year, three Crusader athletes were named to the Academic All-State Composite Teams in their respective sports, a major accomplishment for a school our size, especially one with such a rigorous academic discipline. Thomas Kemp and Nick Waguespack were both named to the Composite Team in football, the first time in school history a football player was named to the team. In cross-country, Brooke Thompson earned the Composite All-State award, a first for that sport in the school's history. Congratulations to all three. Each of them has earned this award through years of hard work, diligence, and sacrifice. We commend them.

WCA Technology Update

If you have more than one child at WCA, you are encouraged to take advantage of Parent Single Sign-On in PowerSchool, our online student information system where grades are posted.  Single Sign-On offers a number of benefits, including access to multiple students with one login, a personalized account for each parent and guardian, and the ability for parents to retrieve their own login information. Parent Single Sign-On changes the way in which parents access their students' academic records using the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Note, for upper school students with access to PowerSchool, this log-in is separate from the parent log-in.

Also, the Rewind Project is a student resource provided by our teachers. Teachers in Middle and Upper School record their classes for future viewing by students and parents.  Visit the Technology page of the WCA website and click on the link to the Rewind Podcast Library in the upper left corner.

Parents' Club Notecard Deadline Change

You still have time to purchase your elementary child's artwork in the form of a notecard!  The artwork has gone home, but the deadline for ordering notecards has been extended.  The final deadline is now November 1st.

Classroom Observations

Classroom observations are happening now across all three WCA campuses.  You are encouraged to schedule a time to observe your child in the classroom today!

Here is the recent testimony of  Brooke Lafleur, a parent of two first grade boys on the Opelousas campus.  "I was delighted this morning as I walked into school for my observation time to find the first graders in chapel worshipping Father God.  It gives Brant and I great joy to know that Caleb and Silas are able to praise, worship, and lift up the name of Jesus at school!  I also wanted to let you know that I was very impressed with the way Miss Vis handled 25 first graders!  She and Mrs. Kimble worked well together in managing, assisting, and instructing the children during seatwork and reading groups.  I wanted to let you know that we appreciate all of you!"

Lessons from a Pencil

Mrs. Seymour explained to 1st and 2nd grade students on the Lafayette campus the parts of a pencil and how they relate to the students. The most important part of a pencil is the lead located on the inside. Likewise, the most important part of a Christian is on the inside...the heart. A pencil has to be guided to be of use. Similarly, God will guide your life if you let Him. The eraser is used to erase mistakes. God erases our sins if we go to Him. And finally there is the point, each person has a point/purpose in life. The students then sang a song called "Lessons from a Pencil" to help them remember what they had learned.

Middle School Mission Team Makes a Difference

Saturday, October 22, 2011 was "Make a Difference Day," which followed nicely on the heels of the "Do Hard Things" conference the previous Saturday. The Middle School Mission Team went down to North Park in downtown Opelousas and spent a couple of hours picking up trash, weed-wacking, raking, and just helping to tidy the place up. Afterward, we had some time to eat lunch together and to fellowship with one another on the playground, sharing it with some of the children who were also already there. Overall, it was a big success, and I was encouraged and blessed to see the number of young men and women who were willing to give of their time on a Saturday.

Crusader Football

The Crusaders traveled to New Roads last Friday night and took care of business, taking a 42-7 win over Catholic-Point Coupee.  The win allowed WCA to retain sole possession of first in district play with a perfect 5-0 mark and moved its season record to 6-2.

This Friday night at 7 p.m. at Crusader Field, WCA will try to get one step closer to a third consecutive district crown as the Saders host the 6-2 Sacred Heart Trojans in a huge district game. We want to encourage a "Blue Out" to blow out the Trojans! We need to have the largest crowd of the year cheering the team to a win!!! Let's show them what true Crusader spirit is all about.

Next week WCA plays Opelousas Catholic, November 4, 2011, 7:00 p.m., Crusader Stadium. This too will be a big game, so don't wait in line, buy your ticket now, only $7.00. Purchase your tickets from Rita Smith in the gym 7:30am-3:30pm.
