Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks to your giving, A's & Aces programming has been able to reach over 500 disadvantaged students this year through in-school, after-school, weekend and summer programs. Your support helped us provide a winning formula for underserved New Orleans public school kids that combines literacy tutoring with tennis instruction, and links these program components through a life skills curriculum implemented both in the classrooms and on the courts.
Why A's & Aces? When the USTA's Education Manager of the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) program asked the 3rd grade class at ARISE Academy in the 9th Ward what they learned by participating in the Arthur Ashe Essay Contest, and a boy replied:
"Arthur Ashe was a great tennis player. He won Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and he was the first man that looks like me that ever did that. But I think that what he did in South Africa to help end apartheid was even more important. But for me the best thing he did was start the NJTLs, because now I get to play tennis."
