2010 was another successful year for A's & Aces and we're pleased to share a few highlights in this newsletter.

Children's "College Experience"
Tennis and Tour on Tulane Field Trip
About 50 children spent Saturday November 13 on the Tulane campus. A's & Aces staff and the Tulane men's and women's teams conducted clinics, and Council President Arnie Fielkow fed balls and spoke about what it means to be a "student-athlete." 
After lunch in the Athletic Department's Hall of Fame, the children broke into small teams and were led on a scavenger hunt to find campus landmarks (the library, the business school, a dorm, etc) by the service-learning Tulane students who tutored them throughout the semester. Read More |

LTA Awards
A's & Aces is Program of the Year; Monhartova is Volunteer of the Year
At its December 4 Annual Meeting, the Louisiana Tennis Association presented A's & Aces with the 2010 "Program of the Year" award. The program was honored for serving large numbers of children with high quality tennis and tutoring, evidenced by achieving USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning First Serve chapter status.
Anna Monhartova was also honored as the LTA 2010 recipient of the "Charles Turner Volunteer Service Award" for her enormous contributions.

Program Highlights
$45/Student-Athlete Needed for Spring Teams
A's & Aces children are concluding the year with Showcase puppet performances. They worked in pairs to create characters from socks and wrote 3-minute plays featuring the life skills they worked on throughout the semester - being a team player and being positive. Over 100 Tulane and Loyola service-learning tutors formed good mentoring relationships  with their 3rd and 4th graders that lead to measurable progress in their student's vocabulary skills and experiential learning from all sides of the relationships.
On the courts, the children have prepared for spring competition. We are fundraising for league fees to allow 100 children to participate for the first time in USTA Junior Team Tennis. A's & Aces' kids will travel to play 10 & unders from area clubs and host home matches at Dillard University. League participation also enhances the chances for our 5th graders to earn college scholarship dollars in the USTA National Student-Athlete Competition.

Halloween Friends, Funds & Fun
Thanks to all friends, new and old, who supported A's & Aces on Oct 30 and made our 3rd Annual Fundraiser so successful. By all accounts, it was a great event! The elaborate Halloween decorations and costumed guests created a 'terrorific' atmosphere, and the food, drink, music, dancing and auction provided fun for everyone.
