"Your Body's Many Cries For Water"

by F. Batmanghelidj, M.D.

Your Body's Many Cries For WaterHow appropriate of a title is this? Each and every one of us gets so involved in what we do on a regular basis that we often forget the basics.  Even those of us "who know better" can forget something as simple as drinking water.

This book accounts for years of study on this subject.  "Dr. Batman", as he is called, is an expert in this field and highly respected by not only alternative health doctors and practitioners, but the western medical field as well.

How much water should you drink? OK, it really is true that a person needs at least 6-8 (8 oz) glasses a day.  However, a more accurate way to calculate is a 1/2 ounce of water for every pound of body weight. If you weigh 200 pounds, that would mean you need 100 ounces per day. Coffee, tea, juice, "energy drinks", "vitamin water", etc. does not count!  Many of the beverages people consume dehydrate the body (especially coffee, black teas and alcohol!)

In reality, in according to Dr. Batman, the body needs 4 quarts of water a day for its' proccesses. Yet, we only need to drink 2-2 1/2 quarts. The other 1 1/2 - 2 quarts of water comes from the breakdown of the foods we eat, which breaks down (metabolizes) into carbon dioxide and .... water!

The other piece of the puzzle is sea salt.  This does not mean "table salt", Morton salt, iodized salt - this means sea salt that contains minerals that the body needs.  The amount of sea salt to take per day does vary but a general recommendation is 1/2 teaspoon every day.  When you sweat, or are in a hot climate, you will need more.  (An excellent and readily available sea salt is "Real Salt" Sea Salt. The company that makes this is Redmonds, from Redmond, Utah. Redmonds Real Salt. This company also has excellent seasonings such as This can be found at our office, Whole Foods, Jimbos or any health food store in your area.)

For those of you "on the path of alternative health", when you are feeling tired, have a slight headache, or if you "just don't feel right" - take some water and sea salt. You'd be surprised how helpful this can be on a daily basis!

"Dehydration can cause disease."

There is no substitute for water. One mistake people make is thinking that other liquids, beverages can replace water. They have water in them, so why can't that be part of my water intake?   Dr. Batman talks about how western medicine often silences the body's signals for thirst by giving the patient chemical products (drugs, etc.) to take away the symptoms. (The book has MANY testimonials describing these types of situations.)

If you are out of the habit of drinking enough water and you want to improve your health, here is a suggestion. At the beginning of your day, measure your 2 quarts of water. Visualize it. Pour it from the measuring glass, into your water bottles to take on the road, or have it where you will see it at home. Yes, you will still drink your other beverages, but this way, you can easily remember to drink a proper amount of water!

The human body is 25% solid and 75% water. The brain tissue is comprised of 85% water. Water is a solvent and is necessary to carry all of the solids that the body uses. The body has a very complex "rationing" system regarding water.  You should never wait until you are actually "thirsty" to drink water.  You need to stay hydrated throughout the day, and more so when you are exercising. By the time you have that "dry mouth" sensation, you are already past the point and you are dehydrated.  Of course, losing consciousness, is definitely "past the point of no return". (At this moment, I can think of 2 people I know that have this knowledge of "drinking water", but actually lost consciousness because they "just forgot".)

The book discusses the role that dehydration plays in "common diseases" and how the western medical community, in the past, has overlooked the simple solution of hydration to assist and/or alliviate these issues.  Some of the diseases cited by Dr. Batman are: Dyspeptic Pain ("heartburn"), Colitis Pain, Haitus Hernia, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Low Back Pain, Neck Pain, Anginal Pain and Headaches. The book has many powerful testimonials from patients and doctors alike. We have this book available at our office or it can purchased at this web site. Water Cure.

NOTE:  If you suffer from asthma or allergies at all, Dr. Batmanghelidj has a book called "Asthma, Allergies and Lupus".  This book is highly recommended by Dr. Specht. "ABC of Asthma, Allergies & Lupus".

"Obesity

Cancer

Depression

Their Common Cause & Natural Cure"

by F. Batmanghelidj, M.D

 Obesity, Cancer, Depression

This book covers a lot of material in only 230 pages so we will discuss just a small amount. Chapter 5 of this book lists "Thirst Perceptions" that are worth being aware of:

  • Feeling Tired
  • Feeling Flushed
  • Feeling Anxious
  • Feeling Dejected
  • Feeling Depressed
  • Feeling Inadequate
  • Feeling a "Heavy Head"
  • Cravings
  • Agoraphobia

Depression:

There are many contributing factors to depression, but lack of hydration is one that is totally in our control. So, staying hydrated is a priority in our daily routine. For those of you that are parents, teaching your children to stay hydrated is a very valuable lesson.  Send a water bottle to school with them; ask if they drank it at the end of the day!

A good way to start out the day in the morning is to simply keep a filled glass of water in the bathroom or the bedside table where it is easy to drink first thing upon waking.  For your children, have a glass of water for them to drink when they wake up AND when they come home from school.  This way, it reminds the body what it needs and makes it easy to do.  And don't forget a little sea salt!

Obesity:

Chapter 4 - "You Overeat When You Are Thirsty!"

There is a lot of information covered in this chapter alone, but some information to remember is that you need to prevent thirst to lose weight.  When you wait to get thirsty to drink water, you get confused and think you are actually hungry.

The amount of water (as stated above) is very important and when you drink it.  It is best to drink water 30 minutes before eating a meal for the best digestion.

Something else to note from the information in this book is that when we consume a carbohydrate, we are consuming water and energy. (Notice "hydrate" in the word!) There are, of course, many types of carbohydrates, and we all know what the best ones are - fruits and vegetables - live food! So, if a person has decided to eat very little amounts of carbohydrates (such as in "The Atkins Diet"), more water needs to be taken to make up for the loss of hydration.

Obesity, or even "needing to lose 10-15 pounds", is a very broad subject and there are opinions from every type of health care professional to the blatant marketing we are bombarded with. BUT, it is generally agreed that drinking a lot of water will aid in this area.

The book has MANY heartfelt testimonials regarding not only weight loss, but depression and cancer as well. It is a book that can be read a little at a time, and also used as a reference book. These books are available at Dr. Specht's office or a Dr. Batmanghelidji's web site: Watercure.com

  Cream Cheese Breakfast Pastries

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 cup cream cheese
  • 2 cups freshly ground wheat or spelt flour*
  • 1/2 cup sucanat
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 finely chopped crispy pecans

Mix butter, cream cheese and flour using an electric beater and let stand overnight.  Mix in sucanat, vanilla and salt.

Using unbleached white flour to keep from sticking, roll out dough on a pastry cloth to 1/4 inch thickness.

Brush with mixture of melted butter and cinnamon and sprinkle with nuts.

Roll up 1 1/2 turns and cut dough lengthwise.  Repeat once more.  You should now have 3 long rolls.

Cut the rolls crosswise into 1 or 1 1/2 inch lengths.  Place individual pastries on buttered cookie sheet and bake at 300 degrees for about 45 minutes.

* For those who cannot have gluten, substitute a gluten free mix, or use coconut flour for an extra taste of the islands!

Alkaline Water

Dr. Specht wanted to comment on the "hype" of alkaline water.

Many of you have been approached to purchase this water, or purchase the expensive machines for your home or office.

The feeling by many health care professionals such as Dr. Specht, Dr. Mercola

(Dr. Mercola's article) and Dr. Andrew Weil

Andrew Weil, M.D.

and others in the field is that the reason the alkaline water "works so well" and "cures many ills" is simply because a person is now actually DRINKING an appropriate amount of water!

The programs all prescribe the amounts of water that Dr. Batmanghelidj has suggested for many, many years!  Usually when a person drinks an appropriate amount of water, coming from a place of not drinking enough, "miracles will happen", just as stated in Dr. Batmans' many books!
