CPHA BRIEF: COMPOUNDERS DAY 2010

On October 16, I was a featured speaker at Compounders Day 2010, a meeting sponsored by the California Pharmacists Association Foundation for Education. My presentation on Facility Guidelines for Safe Sterile Compounding (in conjunction with USP Chapter 797)", was extremely well received by the crowd in attendance - so well received that plans for similar presentations to future pain conferences are in the works.

HARTLEY MEDICAL JOINS PREMIER GROUP OF PCAB-ACCREDITED PHARMACIES.

Hartley Medical has officially become the 11th California pharmacy to be accredited by the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB). What does it all mean? PCAB stands alone as the first of its kind to recognize and accredit pharmacies for undergoing evaluation and approval for adherence to a stringent set of principles, policies and procedures.

Staffed and overseen by leaders in the compounding PCABfield, PCAB represents (and insists upon) none but the highest standards in the industry.

We're all very excited about achieving this milestone. It was an arduous, yet rewarding experience and it constitutes a significant step up in distinguishing our services to clients and regulatory organizations at large. Hartley Medical is proud of its newly earned status and its tradition of peerless-quality service...and we look forward to the journey ahead.

 All the best,

SERVICE STANDARDS THAT STAND ALONE: IRENE DOMINGO

Superior customer service? "No problem." And that's the way our Distribution Coordinator, Irene Domingo, sees it.

"Problem solving is what customer service is all about. I want our customers to know that I have their back...that I care...that I can help address their needs and make their lives just a little bit easier in the doing."

Hailing from Cebu, Philippines and a Hartley Medical employee for the past four years, Irene Domingo has helmed a customer service team that has been instrumental in easing customer concerns, exceeding customer expectations and establishing Hartley Medical as the leader in this industry.

Every order begins and ends with Irene and her team. The team receives, reviews, labels and invoices the order - carefully double-checking drug, strength, volume and price. Once the final calculations are made by the pharmacist and the drug dispensed, Irene is the final quality assurance step before the order is shipped. She then follows up to make sure all orders are shipped (and arrive) in a timely manner.

"Between William and Irene, and the rest of you (Hartley Medical Staff) - a great team!"

Michele N.

Sacramento, CA

Irene's hard work, high standards, exceptional communication skills, and her seemingly uncanny ability to anticipate potential complications and deliver pro-active service are the qualities that inspire and ensure the enduring customer loyalty and abiding customer trust that have helped set Hartley Medical apart from the competition.

Irene Domingo...we here at Hartley Medical honor you and thank you for embodying the highest Hartley standards.

THE SHAPE OF NANS TO COME: HARTLEY MEDICAL AND DR. TONY YAKSH HEADLINE VEGAS!

The NANS Symposium. It's one of the premier pain conferences in North America for interventional pain management - a jewel in the crown, attended by industry leaders in neurosurgery, anesthesiology and pharmaceuticals - and it's coming to the Encore Hotel in Las Vegas on December 2-5. This will be Hartley Medical's fifth year attending and exhibiting. We'll be showcasing our Clean Room staff and facility and will be on hand to meet and interact with all of our current as well as prospective clients. Come visit us at our booth, number 110.

I was fortunate to attend the NANS meeting last year and sat in on some key lectures. One in particular was by Dr. Tony Yaksh, head of the UCSD Department of Anesthesiology. The subject: "Pharmacokinetics of Drugs Within the Intrathecal Space."

Dr. Yaksh began with slides depicting CSF flow, explaining flow movement from head to sacral during systole and its reversion to move toward the brain during diastole. The core of his presentation was a discussion on movement through the spinal canal. He pointed out that by increasing the volume of the drug infused, one can increase the distribution along the spinal space, thus expanding the pharmacological effect in relation to the direction of flow.

It was a detailed, intimate, inspiring presentation and I was absolutely amazed.

Dr. Yaksh will be at the upcoming meeting, along with a list of industry notables you're not likely to see anywhere else. Don't miss this one.

Hartley Medical consistently recommends between 100 and 300 microliters per day to maintain IT infusion. Administering smaller volumes, given the CSF flow, may impede drug distribution.

ON THE SUBJECT OF REIMBURSEMENT CHANGES FOR MEDICARE RECIPIENTS

Last month, existing clients and newsletter recipients participated in our conference call discussion regarding Medicare changes in connection with intrathecal drug therapy.  We received responses from a number of you out there - including Dr. K. Dean Willis, Vice-President of the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS) in Huntsville, Alabama - and the conference call proved such a success that we are encouraged to hold more such clinics in the near future.

We'll keep you posted.

The call was recorded and is available for those of you who were not able to participate. A chart of the changes is also available on my blog.
