An Early Ice-out This Year

The weather has been unusually warm this winter.  In mid-March, when temperatures would normally be around 30 degrees, they were in the high 60's. So spring arrived very early this year with the ice going out in late March rather than late April.  Which means the water will be warming up nicely by mid-May and spring fishing should be VERY active!!

The Best Time to Come to Duck Bay Lodge...

Rick DeAngelo

A question we get asked frequently is "when is the best time to come up".  Every month has its own advantages;  here is what our guide Chris Manley has to say:

May & June:  this is the time of year when most fish are in shallow water (less than 10 feet).  Walleyes, northern pike and bass can be found in shallow bays that have dark mud or sandy bottoms.  Key places include south facing shorelines that warm up faster than the rest of the lake, and shallow flats adjacent to areas with a current.

Sandy shorelines dotted with timber and boulders can be prime area for smallmouth bass; they use this structure to spawn, making them a relatively easy target to catch.

The third Saturday in June is the opening of muskie season, although they are aggressively feeding in May and throughout early June.  Those fishing for other species will often have their catch attacked by a muskie as they are reeling it in.

July & early August:  this is a great time to fish for a variety of fish including muskie, walleye, northern pike and bass.  The main reason fishing at this time of the year can be dynamite is because of the weather.  Stable and predictable weather patterns means stable and predictable fishing patterns underneath!

Target walleye on submerged rock bars and humps; on the hot calm days of summer look for walleyes in the thick weedy bays which is a pattern often overlooked by many anglers.  Early July can be awesome for muskie fishing in areas that have weed/rock combinations.  And the bonus is the long daylight hours the summer provides, which means more fishing time!

late August & September:  my favorite time of the season!  Fall weather means cooler temperatures, cooler water and big fish.  Fish tend to prepare themselves for the long winter ahead by actively feeding.  Some the biggest and heaviest fish are caught during this period.  This is the time of the year when trolling crankbaits for walleye, pike and muskie become more effective.

After a few cool evenings later in August, crappies will start to school up and be found in quantity in some of the deep holes.  The bonus to fishing in the fall is that there are generally no bugs to annoy you while out on the water.  And although there is light boat traffic out our way all the time, September is also the very quietest time of year on the water as local cottagers have departed for the season.

And don't forget that Duck Bay Lodge offers a 20% discount from August 1st - September 30th, making it a terrific value!
