Big Walleyes...

Katie & Sam Pehling - 27 inch walleye
The last couple of years the sizing of walleyes has really increased.  Sam Pehling (pictured here with sister Katie) caught a 27 inch, as did guests Alex Mobley, Jerry Nell and Gene Novak

Duck Bay guide Kyle caught 31 1/2 and 29 inch walleyes and guide Bryan caught a 30 inch.  Conservation measures, and the services of a good guide, really pay off!

We invite you to come on up and try to top one of these nice catches!

Charlie's Memories...

Dominion Day 1950 2

Arriving for the Dominion Day celebration.

(circa 1953)

Guest Charlie Danegger (Arlington Heights, IL) has been visiting Lake of the Woods since the 1930's and owned property in our area in the 1940's and 1950's.  We begged him to write some articles about "the good old days".  The photo is from his personal collection.

In the 40's, 50's and 60's, Morson was a thriving town.  Almost all fish caught commercially were brought there, as well as timber, wild rice, blueberries and furs.  Morson had a new supermarket in 1952 as well as a postal station, a government-run liquor store and some tourist facilities.

On July 1st Dominion Day is celebrated in Canada just as the U.S.A. celebrates its 4th of July.  Every year Norm Dalseg of Morson hosted a fabulous celebration.  The Dominion Day celebration  consisted of many contests including outboard races, canoe races, lumberjack competitions and many booths and other activities.  Attendance was huge and large numbers of Indians attended.  Many people were brought in from the islands by large motor launches.

Hope your 4th of July was extra special too!
