Charlie's Corner...

Guest Charlie Danegger (Arlington Heights, IL) has been visiting Lake of the Woods since the 1930's and owned property in our area in the 1940's and 1950's.  We begged him to write some articles about "the good old days".  Much to the delight of his family who have been making the
same request for years!  The pictures are from his personal collection.  Hope you enjoy them as
much as we do!

Boat at Turtle Portage

For those of you who have used Turtle Portage, here is a little information for you.

For centuries Indians used this narrow strip of land to get to and from Whitefish Bay into Sabaskong Bay.  Later with resorts being built, logs were layed down to accommodate the larger boats.  (see photo above).  About 1950 or 1951 a channel was dug by hand by guides and resort owners.  It was just wide enough to handle small fishing boats.

However after a few years the waters in south Whitefish Bay started clouding up due to mixing with the darker waters of Sabaskong Bay.  That is when the present series of lifts were installed just east of the old portage which was then filled in.
