More about the best Christmas gift ever...

Fighting KnightsYou may remember from our December newsletter that Dave described the medieval castle that was his favorite gift of all time.  We received this picture of it from guest Kevin Wyatt, who said in his note "your "knights" gift reminds me of one of my favorites, which I still have 40 years later.  The Marx Carry-All Fighting Knights Play Set.  This was entertaining for a while, until I discovered muskie fishing!"
Our first guests ever...

Duffy family

When we bought Duck Bay Lodge in 1988, it had been closed for a number of years and had no guests or even guest lists.  That winter we attended our very first sports show, and at that show booked our very first guests Ken Duffy and his friend Bill Walenda.

We are proud to say that over 20 years later, the Duffy family are still guests at Duck Bay.  Over the years Ken brought his son Kevin, and between them they have brought numerous friends, relatives and business associates.  Last summer Kevin brought his 13 year old son Kenny up for the first time.  Three generations fishing together!

You may have noticed a number of new pieces of wildlife art at Duck Bay.  The artist is Ken who, several years ago tried his hand at illustrating using a scratch-board technique.  A scratch-board artist doesn't begin with pencils, inks and paint, rather they start with a solid black board and use sharp-tipped tools to scratch away and reveal the white sub-surface.  The artist sometimes adds colors to the final images with chalks and water colors.  Ken has a passion for illustrating animals in natural settings, and has done hundreds of pieces.  He welcomes requests for commissioned pieces from pet owners and wildlife enthusiasts!

With a background in graphic design, Kevin started a creative marketing firm, Duffy Design Works in 1996.  Since acquiring two other firms, Duffy Design Works has today evolved into Straight North (www.straightnorth.com), a top Chicago internet marketing agency.  Straight North builds lead-generation and ecommerce websites and provides ongoing SEO, PPC and social media management strategy and marketing services.

Kevin is also a founding partner in Officite (www.officite.com) which he helped launch nearly six years ago.  Officite builds high-perfoming websites and marketing programs for physicians.  As the industry leader and largest provider in that space, this fast-growing firm now manages nearly 6,000 medical sites throughout the world.

At 13 years old, Kenny is already quite a fisherman; he caught muskie fever this year helping his cousin land, photo and safely release monsters measuring 47 and 45 inches.  His father says that Kenny's entertaining antics, humor and enthusiasm made this year's trip especially memorable.  Besides fishing, Kenny enjoys snowboarding, playing guitar and singing lead in his band.  Kenny is looking forward to his July 2011 fishing trip and continues striving towards his life's goal of living in the bait shack at Duck Bay Lodge and working as a guide.
