An inside view... We get a lot of questions about the logistics of running an island camp. Sure, it is a little more difficult getting things over to the island than if we'd been located right along a road. But the serenity and privacy of a remote location more than make up for the extra work! Many things at the resort run on propane; both of the kitchen stoves and ovens, the commercial gas dryer in the laundry, and in the cabins themselves, all of the wall heaters and hot water tanks. So it is a necessary commodity. It arrives by barge and is off-loaded into our 1,000 gallon propane tank. Pictured above is the local propane dealer Wally delivering our first load of the year; normally we need about 2 fill-ups per season. Gasoline is another necessity at the resort. Gasoline for the boats is the obvious use, but we also need diesel fuel to keep the generators running. In partnership with three other resorts, we own our own gasoline barge that can transport 1,000 gallons at a time in double-containment tanks. At Duck Bay we can store 1,000 gallons of gas for the boats and 1,300 gallons of diesel fuel. About every 3 weeks we haul a full load. Dave and the guides (whoever is running the barge) always hope for good weather on "barge day" as it is a long slow ride! |
