18th National Symposium

Registration Open for National Symposium on Juvenile Services

On October 14-18, 2012, the National Partnership for Juvenile Services (NPJS) will host its 18th National Symposium on Juvenile Services in Las Vegas, NV. "Merging Juvenile Justice and Youth Development: Responding to the Needs of the Field" will address topics of importance to juvenile justice practitioners, such as jurisdictional planning, juvenile probation, the Prison Rape Elimination Act, and the education and health of youth in confinement.

NIH Scientists Advance Universal Flu Vaccine A universal influenza vaccine - so-called because it could potentially provide protection from all flu strains for decades - may become a reality because of research led by scientists from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.

 

FDA Approves Vaccines for the 2010-2011 Influenza Season The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today that it has approved vaccines for the 2010-2011 influenza season in the United States.

 

PREA Resources

Prof. Brenda V. Smith and The Project on Addressing Prison Rape in collaboration with the National PREA Resource Center will be hosting a webinar entitled Legal Liability for Sexual Abuse of Individuals Under Custodial Supervision on Tuesday October 9, 2012 from 2:00-3:30 pm EST


This webinar focuses on the liability of agencies, staff and others for sexual abuse of people in custody. During the webinar, Prof. Smith will: (1) review the legal issues involved in legal liability including the national PREA Standards and applicable state and federal law inmates and residents from sexual abuse; (2) illustrate legal liability in different settings and scenarios using case law decisions; (3) discuss different elements of liability for municipalities, officials, individuals and staff; and (4) identify steps agencies can take to address potential liability.

 

This webinar is open to all correctional professionals from adult prisons and jails, lock-ups, juvenile justice agencies and community corrections facilities, as well as civil litigation attorneys, prosecutors and community advocates. To register for this event go to:

Reclaiming Futures Webinar To Explore Adolescent Recovery Supports

On September 27, 2012, at 2 p.m. E.T., Reclaiming Futures will present the free, 1-hour Webinar "Implementing Adolescent Recovery Supports and Developing Resources in Our Communities." The presenter, Michelle Muffett-Lipinski, who is principal of the Northshore Recovery High School in Beverly, MA, and co-founder of the icanhelp project, will outline successes and challenges in developing recovery programming within schools and communities, describe responses to mental health and substance abuse issues in schools, and discuss approaches to identifying and engaging youth in need of support.

 

Training Available on Mentoring in Juvenile Justice Settings

MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership will conduct nationwide trainings for juvenile justice and mentoring professionals. Participants will learn about the advantages and challenges of and best practices for mentoring within or in partnership with the juvenile court, juvenile probation, juvenile detention, juvenile corrections, teen court/youth court, and dependency court. Content of these trainings is derived from the OJJDP-funded study, "Researching the Referral Stage of Youth Mentoring in Six Juvenile Justice Settings: An Exploratory Analysis."

 

"Lights On" Event To Promote Afterschool Programs

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention invites communities to participate in the annual Lights on Afterschool on October 18. The nationwide event emphasizes the value of afterschool programs, which keep kids safe, help working families, and inspire learning. They provide opportunities to help young people develop into successful adults.

Philadelphia Receives $1.5 Million OJJDP Grant To Reduce Youth Violence

On September 19, 2012, OJJDP Acting Administrator Melodee Hanes announced a $1.5 million Community-Based Violence Prevention award to the city of Philadelphia. "Youth violence is not inevitable," said Hanes. "Among other activities, this funding will allow Philadelphia to expand its CeaseFire program and continue to change the culture of violence-by mobilizing communities, educating the public, and reaching out to youth-with the help of the city's leadership and law enforcement personnel."

 

Philadelphia is one of four cities that will receive a 2012 Community-Based Violence Prevention grant. Under the program, recipients replicate proven strategies that target the high-risk activities and behaviors of a small number of carefully selected members of the community who are likely to be involved in violent activities, specifically gang and gun violence.

 

Webinar To Address Youth Crossover Between Systems

On September 26, 2012, at 2 p.m. E.T., the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) will present a free 90-minute Webinar "Preventing Youth From Crossing Over Between the Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Systems." Presenters will explore strategies to keep youth in the dependency system from crossing over into the delinquency system and how engaging the education and workforce sectors can support efforts to keep youth from crossing over between systems.

 

Online Bullying Prevention Training Modules Available

Free, online bullying prevention training modules are now available on StopBullying.gov. The training modules offer a PowerPoint presentation for community events, speaker notes with suggested talking points, a Community Action Toolkit, and a video for use in bullying prevention efforts in communities.
