Future Conferences and Trainings

The Youth At-Risk Conference sponsored by JDCAP is now open for registration. All registrations must be completed on line.

 

This year's conference title is

 

NEW SYSTEMS: REPURPOSING JUVENILE JUSTICE

Pittsburgh Marriott City Center

October 2-5, 2012

 

 

All registrants will be required to indicate if you are registering for the full conference or if you are just attending individual (1 or 2) days.

 

  

If you register for the full conference, please indicate if you are planning to attend the Thursday night banquet (for no additional fee!) If you register for one or two days, you may also register for the banquet separately for an additional fee.

 

If you register for the full conference, you will have the choice between attending The Motivational Interviewing Training for Trainers will run for the full 2 ½ days of the conference  or attending a the breakout sessions (which you must select.)

Applications for continuing education will be submitted for Social Workers and Attorneys.

 

We will not be offering continuing education for nurses this year. If your facility nurses are interested in educational opportunities, please have them contact Wayne Bear.

In addition to the conference training opportunities, JDCAP will hold our Strategic Planning Session on Tuesday from 2-5 PM. Following this session, we are planning a night of activities which will involve a sports activity to be determined by the attendees at the Shuman facility.

 

On Wednesday morning, early arrivals may participate in tours of the Shuman facility.

 

We suggest carpooling as much as possible to reduce individual or county costs. If you are interested in carpooling arrangements, please contact Wayne Bear.

PREA Resources:

Prof. Brenda V. Smith and The Project on Addressing Prison Rape in collaboration with the National PREA Resource Center will be hosting a webinar entitled Legal Liability for Sexual Abuse of Individuals Under Custodial Supervision on Tuesday October 9, 2012 from 2:00-3:30 pm EST.


This webinar focuses on the liability of agencies, staff and others for sexual abuse of people in custody. During the webinar, Prof. Smith will: (1) review the legal issues involved in legal liability including the national PREA Standards and applicable state and federal law inmates and residents from sexual abuse; (2) illustrate legal liability in different settings and scenarios using case law decisions; (3) discuss different elements of liability for municipalities, officials, individuals and staff; and (4) identify steps agencies can take to address potential liability.
 

This webinar is open to all correctional professionals from adult prisons and jails, lock-ups, juvenile justice agencies and community corrections facilities, as well as civil litigation attorneys, prosecutors and community advocates. To register for this event go to:

Safe Start Center Releases Toolkit, To Host Chat on Children's Exposure to Violence

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's (OJJDP's) Safe Start Center has released a toolkit to increase awareness about the prevalence of children's exposure to violence (CEV). The free, online resource includes an infographic and links to tip sheets, guides, and other publications on CEV.

 

On September 12, 2012, at 3:30 p.m., the center will host a 1-hour Twitter chat on CEV in school settings. Child advocates are encouraged to participate.

OJJDP Bulletin Examines Effects and Consequences of Underage Drinking

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) has released, "Effects and Consequences of Underage Drinking." The bulletin presents findings from a literature review that investigated how underage drinking can affect a youth's physical, emotional, and neurological health. It also discusses the personal, legal, and economic consequences of underage drinking.

 

The bulletin is part of OJJDP's underage drinking bulletin series, which underscores the dangers of underage drinking and provides guidelines for communities developing treatment and prevention programs.

The Council of State Governments Justice Center recently posted an announcement for a position we are excited to fill: Director of the Juvenile Justice Program in our National Initiatives Division. Our National Initiatives Division coordinates two projects many of you are familiar with: the National Reentry Resource Center and the Criminal Justice/Mental Health Consensus Project. The Juvenile Justice Program Director will be responsible for coordinating our juvenile justice work across these and other Justice Center projects. Transition from School to Work Series

Networks for Training and Development Inc. and Works for Me present a two-part training series, offering best practices and successful strategies to support young people in transition from high school to adult life. The focus of this series will be on facilitating successful outcomes through customized employment strategies. Participants are asked to attend both days. Discovery and Profile manuals are included with registration.

 

This event is free of charge, and refreshments will be provided.

 

Parts I and II of this series will be held in each of the locations around the state approximately four to six weeks apart, beginning in September, 2012.

Coordinating Council Quarterly Meeting To Address Girls' Delinquency

On September 14, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. E.T., the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention will convene in Washington, DC, to discuss risk factors for girls' delinquency, programs to help girls succeed, and policies to reduce the number of girls in the juvenile justice system. The council, chaired by Attorney General Eric Holder, Jr., coordinates federal programs relating to juvenile delinquency prevention and missing and exploited children. Melodee Hanes, Acting Administrator of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, serves as vice chair. Mary Lou Leary, Acting Assistant Attorney General, Office of Justice Programs, will represent the Attorney General at the meeting.
