Understanding the New Federal Health Care Laws
After Tuesday's Election, Does Any of this Matter?

Yes!  While Republicans will have a sizable majority in the incoming U.S. House of Representatives, Barack Obama remains the president and the U.S. Senate is still controlled by Democrats.  The new federal health care laws are still a reality and while there may be some changes, next session, the new laws remain and we do not anticipate major changes, anytime soon.

The new federal health care laws will affect every employer, third party administrator and insurance broker in the country. WMC, the law firm of Michael Best & Friedrich, Greater Brookfield Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, and the Waukesha County Business Alliance invite you to a lively session in which legal experts will explore the details of the new health care laws, with a focus on the immediate steps employers need to take. We will divide the session into three parts.

  • Short High-Level Overview of the New Health Care Laws: A brief reminder of the "big picture" and a quick overview of some of the longer-term concerns for Wisconsin employers.
  • Health Plan Changes In-Depth: A detailed discussion of the health plan changes required for 2010 and 2011. We will describe which changes are avoided if your plan is "grandfathered" and the tricky details of all changes.
  • Required Administrative Actions: The new law will require certain changes in how plans are administered. For example, many plans are now subject to a new "external review" process and employers must report the value of health plan coverage on Form W-2. We will explore these new requirements and many others in detail and offer practical tips on the requirements that take effect in 2010 and 2011.
