Our Summer Intern
Please extend a warm welcome to Blake Tipton, our summer intern. Blake is 24 and from Atlanta, Georgia. His alma mater is the University of Georgia where he obtained bachelor's degrees in Philosophy and Political Science. He will return to Duke University in the Fall as a 2nd year student. Blake has been a member of The Episcopal Church since November 2009 and is an aspirant in the Atlanta Diocese. He enjoys theological and philosophical dialogues, reading fiction, jogging, writing, water tubing, and dirt biking. |
Growing In Generosity Stewardship Campaign 2011
As of today we have received 423 pledges for a total of $1,875,196.
This includes $53,777 in pledge increases and gifts.
Our summer intern, Blake Tipton, preached a terrific sermon yesterday. The Duke internship program that Blake is a part of is win/win. The program allows our parish to meet young people entering into Episcopal priesthood and at the same time allows Blake the opportunity to learn from our clergy and staff about what it takes to make a parish like CSMSG thrive. Thank you for your pledge! Growing in Generosity Stewardship testimonials

From the Pews Wouldn't it be great to be able to say, at the end of each day, "Wow, God allowed me to _______ today!" I sit in my pew each week and wonder what I should put in that blank. What should God allow me to do? You know, wouldn't it be great if God just pushed me a little bit more, gave me a little clearer direction. I sit in my pew and wait for permission. For a sign. For enlightenment. And I promise that, when it happens, I'll really jump to it and get busy. No, really. I promise. When He says "Go," I'll go! When He fills in the blank, I'll be His loyal servant. I'm waiting. I'm ready. I'm still waiting. (Do I remind you of the servant who buried his talent in the field?) Maybe what I should do is spend a few minutes filling in the blank myself, with just a few items. Maybe God is waiting for me. I could do that quietly in my pew every Sunday before the service. I could come early and fill in the blank. I should. I think I will!

New Name Tags Are Here!
First, look for your new name tag on the rack where you normally find it on Sunday morning. If it is not there then please check the table in the hallway. If it is not on the table, fill out a green slip and a new one will be made for you. Our newcomers and wonderful intern Blake want to learn our names, so please wear your nametag on Sunday.

Music Ministry
Calling All Singers!
If you like to sing, can read music, and you have some choral experience, now is your opportunity to be a part of the CSMSG Choir. Any singers who are not members of the choir during the regular season are invited to join us throughout the summer to assist in the leadership of our 10 AM Holy Eucharist on Sunday mornings. Any interested singers need only appear in the choir room on Sunday mornings for a 9 AM rehearsal. One need not commit to the entire summer -- singers are welcome for just one Sunday, for the entire summer, or for any combination of Sundays through Sunday, September 4. The regular choir season resumes on September 11. Any questions? Call Rob Lehman in the church office or email rwlehman@csmsg.org.

Endowment Fund
Over the last several years, it has become apparent that the Endowment Fund of The Church of St. Michael and St. George ("CSMSG") needs to be significantly expanded. Our members provide generous financial support to fund the ongoing activities of the church. The average annual pledge of CSMSG members is almost twice as large as those of other Episcopal churches. Unfortunately, our endowment of approximately $6 million is much smaller than statistical comparisons would indicate is needed for a vibrant church of our size.
The recent period of economic weakness has graphically illustrated that pledges alone will not completely fund our current programs, allow full implementation of the recently approved Strategic Plan, and assure the long-term viability of the CSMSG. The logical source of additional and consistent revenue to meet these objectives is a larger endowment.
The Endowment Expansion Committee has been formed to study our financial needs. The Committee, chaired by John Rowe, includes: Ken Bean, Spencer Burke, Marianna Deal, Becky Fouke, Nick Kouchoukos, Talbot MacCarthy, Jeff Miller, Stephen Nickelson, Joe Sheehan and JoAnn Vorih. If you have any suggestions regarding this important initiative, please feel free to discuss them with the Committee members. |

Thursday, August 11, 18, 25, September 1 & 8Lectio Divina The ancient practice of "lectio divina" (literally "holy reading") begins with cultivating the ability to listen deeply, to hear "with the ear of our heart" the words of Holy Scripture. Using the lectionary readings for the coming Sunday, we "pray the scriptures" and discover an increasing ability to offer more of ourselves and lives to God. The Rev. Susan Skinner will facilitate a group on Thursday afternoons, 4:30-5:30 PM, beginning August 11 through September 8. The group will meet in the Library. The fee for the 5 week session is $15. CSMSG contact is Patience Schock, 314.757.0491 or patience.schock@sbcglobal.net.

Faith in Action
Cell Phones
If you own an old cell phone that you no longer use, you could provide a much needed safety net to a victim of domestic violence. Old cell phones are being collected and refurbished to provide women at risk with a secure phone to make "911" calls in the event of a domestic emergency. The phones (no accessories please) are being collected in the Sant Memorial Library.
Casseroles 'R' Us Did you know that one casserole feeds a family of four for two days? Pick up your casserole pan and lid with the recipe near the receptionist's desk at the church, make the casserole and return it to the church freezer. This need is increasing every day. Put a group together and come to church and assemble the casseroles. Call Becky Zaccarello at 314.721.4565 or Peggy Strelinger at 314.721.1502 for details. The casseroles are delivered to local food pantries where they are distributed to families. Please help meet this local community need.
KIDs/ECM Birthday Parties Episcopal City Mission's birthday party for the kids at the Juvenile Detention Center will be August 12. Volunteers can help with purchasing supplies for the party, decorating the room before the event or assisting with the program for the evening from 5:45-8:30 PM. Come in and browse the new titles, the jams from A Monastery Kitchen and the colorful bracelets, rings and necklaces from Pink House. Cool off in the Bookstore and enjoy the sights. Imprinting available and the Bookstore does not collect sales tax. Fragments of Your Ancient Name by Joyce Rupp assembles a remarkable collection of reflections for each day of the year. Once again, Joyce Rupp proves herself a wise and gentle spiritual midwife, drawing forth 365 names of God from the world's spiritual treasury. Rupp stirs the imagination and the heart to discover a new dimension of God. What's The Least I Can Believe And Still Be A Christian? by Martin Thielen clears away theological underbrush and rediscovers a Jesus-centered approach to the Christian faith. This whimsical title disguises a very serious issue: how to help Christians navigate through myths and misunderstandings and faulty assumptions about our faith. The Red Sea Rules by Robert Morgan reveals, even in the midst of seemingly impossible situations, God's promise to make a way for us. His loving guidance will protect us through danger, illness, marital strife, financial problems -- whatever challenges Satan places in our path. Mr. Sunday's Soups by Lorraine Wallace contains more than 75 delicious, homemade soup recipes to bring your family together. These are rave-worthy soups you can try yourself. Whether a cool summer gazpacho, a hearty winter stew or anything in-between, you'll find a delicious recipe for all seasons. All Majesty and Power, a selection of the Episcopal Book Club, is an anthology that contains select "royal prayers" from throughout history. It consists of two parts -- prayers by royalty and prayers for royalty. Scriptures as well as prayers used by Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots and Prince Philip, in addition to others. The book collects prayers in various styles beginning with prayers used by the first Christians up to the present day. All Majesty and Power is published by Wm. B. Eerdmans and is available in Canterbury Bookstore. Would you enjoy working with books, meeting new people, and learning about new products available in the Bookstore? We'd love to have you as part of the Canterbury Bookstore team. Call Peggy at 314.721.1502 and learn more about the possibilities.
