		| In Praise of Fire Fire is primal, elemental, and wild.  It resists containment and control; fire must spread.  In Holy Scripture, God's presence is made known through signs and fire-the burning bush that speaks to Moses, the pillar of fire that leads the people of God out of slavery, and the tongues of fire that descend on the heads of the faithful at Pentecost-God shows up in a blaze of glory.  Fire evokes a sense of judgment, anger, and a purifying heat.  So, too, fire can be connected with passion and even safety.

In our time together this coming January 21-22, 2011, we will explore with the Reverend Jered Weber-Johnson the connections between our faith and fire.  We will discuss the scriptural accounts of God's presence being made manifest in fire.  We will delve into the Christian understanding of fire in and throughout our tradition, in the sacraments and rites of our faith.  And, ultimately, we will seek to rediscover and rekindle the fire that has been given to each of us by God, so that what has been sparked in us might spread to others.

The Reverend Jered Weber-Johnson is the Assistant Rector at St. Alban's Parish, in Washington, DC, where he oversees youth, young adult, hospitality, evangelism, communication, and environmental (green) ministry.  Jered received his Masters of Divinity at the General Theological Seminary in New York City.  While in New York, Jered also worked on Spiritual Formation grants for Trinity Wall Street as a grants officer.  Prior to seminary, Jered and his wife,Erin, served the Episcopal Church as Young Adult Service Corp missionaries to Taiwan.   The Weber-Johnson's have also lived in Greenville, Illinois (where they met while attending undergraduate school at Greenville College) and in Seattle, Washington (where they both worked as paralegals at partnering law firms).  Jered grew up in rural southeast Alaska where he worked just about every fisheries job conceivable.  The Weber-Johnson's have a 1 1/2 year-old son, Jude.
