SCG's Shipping Service Improvements

Thanks to several of the system improvements we wrote about a few months ago and some really hard work on the part of our shipping crew, we've been able to improve our shipping service level.

Now, when you place an order before 3PM Pacific and select an express shipping method, your order will ship the same day! This applies to orders that are fulfilled from our Seattle warehouse, have USPS, Expedited Ground, 3-day, 2-day or Overnight shipping service and are placed Monday - Friday. Orders placed on the weekend or that are fulfilled directly by the manufacturer will still ship next business day. This change doesn't alter our Free Shipping service, however; that still allows for 2 business days processing time with a 5 - 9 business day delivery window. If you want more detail or just really love fine print, check out our Shipping Policy.

Additionally, with the recent price increases in transit and shipping services, we have tried to absorb some of the cost by splitting them with you where possible -- sometimes up to 50% of our hard shipping costs. Our hope is that these discounts will make same day shipping services a reasonable option for many of you.

Our crew is committed to continuously improving our operations in order to provide you with efficient, relevant and knowledgeable service, so we hope that these improvements will help you get the gear you love when you need it!

Ask the Experts
Q. What's the difference between a non-pressurized and a pressurized portafilter? What's a bottomless portafilter? Is one style better than the other? Help!

A. The finer points of portafilters are a hot topic and a very common question we get from customers as they're researching gear.

Pressurized portafilters slow down extraction, keeping the water in contact with the coffee for a longer period of time. You can use pre-ground coffee, low quality grinders or ESE pods and still get a serviceable shot, but the quality does suffer a bit. And while they're producing what appears to be crema, it's really just aerating the coffee and not showing off the freshness of the roast.

Non-pressurized portafilters provide for a traditional extraction, requiring that you dial in your grind, dose and tamp and also that you use a good grinder and fresh coffee. If you produce nice shots with lovely crema on these machines, it's a testament to your skill-set and your coffee's freshness!

Bottomless portafilters reduce the amount of metal or potential cooling elements coming into contact with your shot, as well as provide you excellent feedback on your technique.

Caffe Umbria
Starts @$14.00
A new Seattle-based roaster, Caffe Umbria offers some of the best tasting ESE pods we've tested! Available in both regular and decaf, these make fairly rich shots (for pods!) and we highly recommend them. If you're looking for whole beans, we also added their Gusto Crema espresso, Terra Sana organic espresso and Arco Etrusco drip coffees.
Another local roaster we've just added is this smaller shop located in Seattle's SODO district. Featuring our first dark roast espresso blends (oh my!), we're offering their Full City Espresso, Back Pedal Brew and Tough As Nails coffees. We never thought we'd love dark roasted coffee so much! Great flavor, sans charcoal.
Sure, we may be expanding our line of coffees, but our love affair with Velton's Coffee will never end! It's time for the most highly anticipated event of the season: The introduction of his limited edition holiday blend. This year's offering is a 50/50 split between two lovely, fruity coffees, designed to bring out the finer points of fruitcake.
