Ask the Experts Q. Is it okay to store my coffee beans in the freezer? Will that keep them fresh?
A. We have been testing all types of storage methods over the past few months to see if any of them stand up over time. In our latest test, we stored 2 lbs. of freshly roasted Velton's Bonsai Blend in the freezer for a few months, let them defrost overnight and then tested them.
When we first opened the bag, we were surprised that there was a rich coffee smell -- the aromatics had only diminished somewhat ... so, honestly, we had hope!
We ground them at the same grind/tamp that we had dialed in a fresh bag (similar to our other tests) and then pulled a shot. The results were, unfortunately, unpalatable. The shots came out too quickly and no amount of dialing in the grind would save it.
You can watch us compare the two different bags (one completely sealed, the other opened and then sealed with the tab) in this video. Ijole!
