Just Move It 2012Just Move It

It's time for the 7th annual Just Move It fitness initiative.  Just Move It (JMI) is UAH's 10-week campus-wide health and fitness competition, open to all faculty, staff, students, and alumni.  Free to participate.

Join the "UAH Alumni" team for Just Move It 2012 and let's encourage each other in our health goals for 2012.  To join the team, just mention the "UAH Alumni Team" on your registration form.  Progress is tracked online so you can workout whenever and wherever you'd like.  So you do not have to live in Huntsville (or even in Alabama) to participate.  All alumni are welcome!

Just Run It 2012

Whether you want to run a 5k and have never run a step in your life, or you just want to improve your running form, speed or endurance, Just Run It will get you there.

Jane Reneau, a certified USA Track & Field Level I Coach and UAH employee, will be leading this group for Just Move It participants.  Jane will set up a training plan that prepares participants to run a 5k, which is 3.1 miles.  At the end of the program all participants will run the Cookie Dash 5K Run on April 21st.

Runners will meet weekly for a group run on campus with Jane, and will be responsible for other training runs on their own.  Jane will be available via email to answer questions, provide motivation, and help you reach your goal.

If you are interested in Just Run It, please attend the informational meeting on Tuesday, February 7th at 12:15 at the University Center Rm 126.  Jane will give you on overview of the program and answer any questions you may have.  This is a FREE program for UAH alumni, students, faculty, and staff.

Living Green

From roofing to flooring, "eco-friendly" materials and devices can help you save money when you're maintaining, repairing or improving your home. Even better, they help save the environment. Join the Green Revolution and consider these simple ways to conserve energy and other natural resources.

  • Use impact-resistant roof shingles made from asphalt, metal or simulated tile. They deflect hail, wind and fire better than asphalt and keep roofing material out of landfills.
  • Replace appliances more than ten years old with energy-efficient models, which could save you hundreds of dollars a year according to the EPA.
  • Install low-flow showerheads and toilets to conserve water.
  • Exchange your most-used lighting fixtures for Energy Star models to help reduce greenhouse gasses.
  • Switch to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs, which can save more than $30 in electricity costs compared to an ordinary incandescent bulb.
  • Substitute recycled plastic lumber for concrete, work and metal in decks, fences, swing sets and landscaping.
  • Choose renewable flooring materials when you build or redecorate, such as bamboo, cork, reclaimed glass and salvaged wood.
  • Lay carpeting made from natural, organic or fair-trade fibers that are friendly to the environment and hypoallergenic.
