CI Solutions AwardChildren's Hospital Project Receives National Recognition - Announced at InfoComm in Las Vegas

EH Publishing announced the winners of Commercial Integrator's new CI Solutions Awards.  Audio Video Interiors of Middleburg heights received an award for its work on the Expressive Arts Therapy Center at Akron Children's Hospital.

The awards recognize stand-out, problem-solving installations that address commercial customer's needs in a variety of vertical markets including: Corporate, Health Care, Retail, Houses of Worship, Government and more. Winners were showcased in a slideshow presentation at the Commercial Integrator HQ booth at InfoComm, the industry's leading commercial AV tradeshow held in Las Vegas.  This entry earned Honorable Mention, a second place win in the healthcare category behind a full-scale hospital project.

This children's hospital project began as an Elf foundation "Room of Magic" and blossomed into a center for healing through the arts for critically ill children.

Expressive Therapy through visual arts, music, dance, poetry and drama allow children to accept their illnesses, come to terms with their appearance, gain power over their illness and adjust to the hospital environment.

A rooftop location was enclosed to provide a dynamic space that housed these elements that would accommodate children in all types of physical conditions, from those confined to beds and wheelchairs to children with immune disorders. Children have access to a recording studio, stage, karaoke, projection system and an easy-to-operate PTZ camera to record their performances. They can then edit their performances using Apple PCs. They can also record personal messages in a sound booth or simply watch movies in a multi-use theater setting. A main objective was to automate the room's systems with user friendly wireless touchpanel that staff and patients could operate with little to no instruction.

"I worked with a  nine year old African American female who was admitted to Akron Children's Hospital for Hemoptysis.  She had missed a lot of school due to her illness and because of her absence and other issues she faced, she struggled socially with her peers.  She wrote, directed, and acted out her personal story of being bullied.  She had wanted to show the video to her family in the Expressive Therapy Center but due to her parents' work and school schedule, only she and the Expressive Therapy Center Staff were present to witness her powerful story through her film.  She was overjoyed and very proud of her movie, and she identified goals of going into movie production when she was older because of her personal journey of filmmaking with the Elf Project."

About the Project

After years of dreaming, and with the help of many generous contributors, the Expressive Art Therapy Center has opened at Akron Children's Hospital.  Music, art, poetry and dance have been used by the hospital for years as a way to help children and their families cope with illness and express their feelings.  This center expands on this healing concept.

Michael Pope, President of Audio Video Interiors, had been working with the hospital for several years on a similar project to provide an audio video experience for the children.  With an inspired idea of Dr. Sarah Friebert, the vision and scope of the original project grew and Pope explains, "When we learned of the Expressive Arts Therapy project and how the children could benefit from an interactive system that included a recording studio, projection system, and performing stage, we immediately decided to merge our talents with the architects and creative hospital staff to help make this incredible, healing room a reality."

Gary Matthews, CTS, Director of Business Deveolpment, designed the AV system with scalability and ease-of-use in mind, allowing for the system to grow as needed while being simple to operate.  The system allows the children to perform karaoke-style while being filmed using a professionl-grade pan/tilt/zoom camera controlled much like a video game via a joystick.  He was able to achieve his design goals with the generous support from manufacturers including NEC, Crestron and Ashly, each providing donated or deeply discounted products.  The system is completely automated and provides assisted listening, making it wheelchair & hospital bed accessible, as well as being available to the hearing-impaired.  Clay Matthews, CTS, served as the Programmer and Lead Technician on the installation.  Clay programmed camera pre-sets and simple function buttons, making the hi-performance system user-friendly.

Additional information about the project can be found on the Audio Video Interiors website.

Entries were received in seven categories and winners were chosen by the Commercial Integrator editorial and art staffs. Judging criteria included all aspects involved in system solution, such as project creativity, innovation, equipment incorporated, obstacles overcome, client's priorities met, aesthetic and benefits.

The winners for the 2012 CI Solutions Awards will be featured in Commercial Integrator magazine and on www.commercialintegrator.com.

"The goal of this contest is to uncover and highlight project solutions that provide in-the-field lessons for integrators," states Tom LeBlanc, editor in chief, Commercial Integrator. "We're thrilled with the submissions we received across various vertical markets, and we're proud to get the chance to convey these stories. Congratulations to the winners."
