flap style purse

Dear Readers,

Who among us wants to be thought of as old fashioned, out of touch, or God forbid, a dinosaur? NO ONE!  So, when it comes to such things as modern technology [yikes!] and social media [double yikes!], I am learning. Recently, with the much needed help of my adorable 18 year old nephew, we created a business link on Facebook, such that prospective clients can now see both my photo and my business brochure! Wow. And Twitter? OMG, yes, I now tweet. But, my point is this: we all need to learn and change, grow and improve as we mature, right? And like it or not, our physical appearance is an obvious indicator as to whether or not we are indeed "modern". With that in mind, may I offer you some advice on the age old custom of carrying a handbag? Often woefully neglected, it is a huge part of your image as a woman who knows what's happening out there and shows it. The days of one purse, every time, holding all things, are gone!

Here are some  ideas about choosing a handbag that will speak loudly and well about who you are [a thoroughly modern woman], what you do [business professional, stay at home Mom or active retiree], and how you do it [your standards of excellence].

1. Like clothes, size matters! If you are tall, you need a larger size bag. If you are petite, a smaller bag is more in keeping with your smaller frame. Think proportion, not "how much stuff can I jam in there?"

 2. Since a handbag is not carried up around the face, you can choose any color that suits your fancy. If you love color [like purple, green or tangerine], I say go for it!

If your wardrobe is primarily neutral [grey, black, navy, tan, white or brown] you can carry any color, print or pattern bag you like.

If, on the other hand, if you wear lots of color and prints, it's probably best to stick with a neutral color bag.

3. Seasonal change is a good thing for purses. It gives them a chance to rest and be ready for their next turn, right? Much like what seasonal change can do for our individual spirits overall.

4. "Appropriate for the occasion" is another consideration when you choose your purse. That big black hobo bag you schlep to and from the grocery store and the gym? Probably not a great choice for a client meeting or dinner with friends, and definitely not appropriate for your niece's Christening!

Instead, why not carry a sleek clutch or flap style structured bag that will accommodate just exactly what you need when you need it that day! It's modern, it has more style, and it's much more professional / polished looking, no matter your circumstances.

Last but not least, I am so very happy to report that the bling laden, super sized, metallic beauties of the past are OUT. Less hardware, more leather and certainly more lady-like styles aptly describe the purses of the moment. Take a look! You just might find one hiding in your closet or . . . you may need to add a handbag to your spring shopping list! Either way, when you select your purse, please remember the wise words of the great Leonardo DaVinci: "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

Warmest and best regards,

Nancy

reader FAQ

Q. I often need to carry files and other work materials home with me. Do I need to carry both a briefcase AND a purse?

A. You probably need something in addition to  your purse, but not necessarily a traditional briefcase. Many say these have become passe. If you invest in a good looking, high quality tote bag, you can carry both your files and your purse in it! You can also carry other essentials like your Mac Pro, your iPad, your iPhone [oh wait...that's my fantasy tote bag content...sorry.] and of course, your cosmetics and your lunch.

Q. Some of the nicest handbags out there are also some of the most expensive. So, when to splurge and when to go discount is my dilemma!

Your best advice?

A. If you decide to have more than one nice handbag in your wardrobe, hooray for you! I think it's a good idea to have one splurge for winter and one for summer. The rest can be lower end brands because they will likely be used less often and will not take a beating like your splurges will. I buy the lower end brands like Nine West, and Stone Mountain, both of which I have found at TJ Max.
