Nancy Pipal's Style File: Travel Light & Pack Smart
July
2010

Dear Readers,
Are you a person who's really not sure what to pack, so you pack everything?  Do you always intend to streamline your approach to travel, but so far, no cigar?  Welcome to the club!  Setting aside some time to think about and plan your wardrobe is key to traveling light and packing right. So, how about if we Americans try a more European approach this time, starting with a wonderful mantra of the fashionable French. Breathe deeply and repeat after me:
Less is more, less is more, less is more . . .

What will you wear on your next trip?

Gail here has obviously missed the boat on planning her travel wardrobe. [But, she is making me giggle uncontrollably.]
So, if you don't want to end up looking like Gail, please note these top ten packing tips:

1.  Check www.weather.com before you decide what to bring. You can get a good look at average temps for the area and at least a five day forecast.

2.  Think about the "culture" of your destination. Is it strictly big city urban, small town country, island resort, lake house cottage?  [ Lots of black is chic in NYC, but in Napa Valley? Not so much.]

3.  Make a list, check it twice, and pack only what you have on the list.

4.  Call ahead to see if the place where you are staying has shower essentials, an iron, a hair-dryer, laundry facilities and/or dry-cleaning services.

5.  For a one week's stay, bring just enough clothing for three days and three nights and plan to wear everything at least twice.

6.  Stick with neutrals in the same color palette and think layers, separates, and bring at least one sweater or jacket.

7.  Pack very little jewelry and just a few well chosen accessories.

8.  Keep hair products and makeup to a minimum. They may look small, but they add up in a hurry. This is the perfect time to think of yourself as low maintenance!

9.  Limit your shoes [difficult but not impossible]. Three pairs should do it.  Pack two and wear one. And since flip-flops are exclusively for the pool or shower, they don't count!

10. Wear comfy clothes on travel days, but remember that you are a well dressed person who saves exercise clothes for the gym, right? Right.

And last but certainly not least, try to relax, enjoy, and go with the flow. Who cares if it rains?  You will be dodging those cloud-bursts in effortless style and grace!

Bon Voyage, Mes Amis!
Nancy

Words of Wisdom

Our friend Tim Gunn, author of Tim Gunn's Guide to Quality, Taste and Style, has this to say about packing:

"You may be tempted by the packing theme 'person who wears all the things in my closet that I never wear'. Resist this.
If that kimono top doesn't feel right in Berkeley, it won't feel right in Berlin either."

 Reader FAQ

Q. I am traveling this summer to attend a wedding and I will be staying with a friend. I am part of the wedding party, so I am nervous about packing my dress. Any advice?
 A. Yes. Drive.
Seriously, you should probably carry your dress in a high quality garment bag and take it on the plane with you. Ask a flight attendant to hang it up for you and tell him/her why it is precious. If you do this, you should be able to rest easy that your dress will be well taken care of.

Q.
I have a terrible time trying to find jeans that fit!  Any suggestions for women who are narrow in the waist and wider in the hip and thighs? Also, is it true that white jeans make everyone look heavier?
 A. One of my clients recently told me about "Cookie Johnson" jeans. She said they are designed for "curvy" women, so they fit well, are very comfortable and look great. See them at:

As for white jeans? It is true that darker colors minimize the lower half of the body, but that does not mean that white or tan will make you look heavier! It just means that if you wear white jeans, they will need to be the right style and as close to perfect a fit as you can get. I say go for it!
