During a recent workshop I held for a delightful group of executives and managers from Exelon Corporation, someone dared to ask "Bare legs or pantyhose?". The discussion that ensued was lively, to say the least! After all, according to the fashion experts, pantyhose are both old-fashioned and aging. And who among us wants to wear them if given a choice? This was my reply: if you have tanned, toned, flawless and beautiful legs, by all means skip the pantyhose. But make no mistake about it, ladies. During office hours, hose are a must . . . ALWAYS. Even on "casual Fridays"? Even then. But do not despair! Pantyhose have significantly improved over the past few years. Today, they are more comfortable, flattering, and, dare I say, chic? For work, they should be sheer, nude and very high quality. And in answer to those who say nude hose are "aging", I say this . . . do you really think spider veins are youthful looking?
Opaque hose [tights] are a very strong trend yet again this season. Are they work-appropriate? Yes, but only if they are the same dark neutral color [black, brown or grey] as your skirt or dress, and shoes. Worn with mid or high heel pumps, I love this look! It's modern, stylish, and elongates the leg-line making everyone look taller and slimmer. [Beware of patterned, shiny or colorful opaque hose, however, as these are extremely casual and exclusively for younger women.] And lest we forget, none of the gladiators, strappy sandals, peep toes, spike heels or backless shoes you see in fashion magazines belong on the busy feet of women in the work place. Rule of thumb . . . If your shoes are casual or sexy, save them for the weekend.
What about boots? They are ever so trendy and just about everywhere we look. And I must say they look fabulous! The good news? Boots are always a welcome and stylish addition to your wardrobe. The bad news? Few are multi-purpose. Savvy career women often ask me if boots are ever appropriate for the office. Sadly I report that only leather "shoe boots" or "booties", in a neutral color, no higher than the low ankle, in a classic style [no buckles, ruffles, bows, bells or whistles] are actually work-appropriate. Not what you wanted to hear, I know.
Any and all of your comments are welcome . . .
