Soul Flow YogiSoul Flow Yoga Studio

Hi Soul Flow Yogis,

"Try Yoga" was on a life list I made when I graduated from Clemson.  Ironically, it was written on a road trip to Chicago (I-40) with some friends, for a job I didn't get.  So, I came back to my air mattress in Clemson eager to start my life's to do list.  Bought a yoga deck of cards and did each pose, one card at a time in my spaciously sparse room on the carpet.  A little over ten years later, it has altered my entire life.

Things came full circle as we were driving back from Nashville (I-40) after completing our 500 hour certification.  "Westerners view change within 10 minutes.  Easterners view change within 10 years."  Looking back on the last decade, a mix of the beautifully, awkward transformation of life in your 20s, the practice of yoga, experiences through people, places, events, it was a bit overwhelming.

I guess my point in all the rambling is that everyone reading this is a part of an amazing revolution called yoga.  It can be something you show up to and leave but ultimately, subtley, it will change your life.

If you can take the guiding principles (eight limbs) of this practice (the six branches), become more familiar with yourself as a result and in turn encourage someone else to do the same, this world can't help but be transformed into a more open, accepting, peaceful place!

This is Yoga:

"Do not ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself instead what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."  Harold Whitman

Jill and I recently finished our 500 hour certification through Yoga Alliance (see the Ask Flo' below) in Nashville this past month!
This was our wonderful graduating class!
I cried!
Soul Flow's
Community Garden!
Soul Flow's Garden
Carrots, Lavendar, Lettuce...

Come by and see the garden!

Volunteer:

Stop by and water the garden.

Just move the ring to the day you watered so we won't duplicate.

It's a bit Zen.  Turn the rain barrel on and give it time.  Come with patience.

What is Yoga Alliance and 200 and 500 hour certification?

Yoga Alliance Logo

Mission & History of Yoga Alliance:

Yoga Alliance® is the national education and support organization for yoga in the United States. We work in the public interest to ensure that there is a thorough understanding of the benefits of yoga, that the teachers of yoga value its history and traditions and that the public can be confident of the quality and consistency of instruction.

Yoga Alliance was formed in 1999 by a merger of two volunteer organizations, Unity in Yoga and Ad Hoc Yoga Alliance. Unity in Yoga sponsored national and international yoga conferences from 1982 until 1995. Ad Hoc Yoga Alliance was formed in 1997 to create minimum standards for yoga teachers. Since our formation, we have emphasized mutual respect, sensitivity and support of different yoga styles and traditions.

In September 1999, Yoga Allianceestablished a national Yoga Teachers' Registry to recognize and promote teachers with training that meets our minimum standards. Teachers who meet these standards are eligible to register as Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT®s). In 2005, in conjunction with enhanced and revised standards for registration, we began recognizing and registering teachers with significant teaching experience in addition to training. These teachers can register as Experienced Registered Yoga Teachers (E-RYTs).

Jill and I now have both our 230 hours of certification and our 500 hours, qualifying us both as E-RYT.

Pose of the Month

Ananda Balasana

(Happy Baby Pose)

Happy Baby

1.  Lie on your back. With an exhale, bend your knees into your belly.

2. Inhale, grip the outsides of your feet with your hands (if you have difficulty holding the feet directly with your hands, hold onto a belt looped over each sole.) Open your knees slightly wider than your torso, then bring them up toward your armpits.

3. Position each ankle directly over the knee, so your shins are perpendicular to the floor. Flex through the heels. Gently push your feet up into your hands (or the belts) as you pull your hands down to create a resistance.

4. Coax the thighs in toward your torso and down toward the floor as you lengthen the spine-release your tail bone toward the floor and lengthen the base of your skull away from the back of your neck.

5. Hold the pose steadily for 30 seconds to one minute. Then release the feet back to the floor with an exhale and rest for a few breaths.
