Hi Soul Flow Yogis,

 

Happy New Year!!!  

 

The year of 1...  1-1-11. 

 

Of course I'm a bit late and missed that actual mark for sending this out but my intention for this year is to slow down.  And in attempting my intention with utmost positive, patient, persistence, it is what it is and you will now have the same information on January 4 instead of January 1.  

 

...and the sun will still come up tomorrow.

   

The year of the 1, of fresh starts, of change, of goals...  A bit daunting in my opinion.  Start with an intention rather than a 'set in stone' ideal so that when you miss your mark you don't feel like a failure and you can ride the wave instead of being swallowed by the current. 

 

"As the foundation is built, so the walls of the house shall rise."  

 

Listen to your body, have a conversation with it, build a relationship with it.  Just as you would with another person, your body speaks to you through muscles, sensations, releases, tightness...  Use this to learn about yourself, be open to that empowerment as you move into the new year.  For it is through self awareness that we learn self control and ironically from all of this the ability to let go and live freely.

What are Prayer Flags?
 Prayer Flags
A prayer flag is a colorful panel of rectangular cloth often found strung along mountain ridges and peaks high in the Himalayas to bless the surrounding countryside (or in our studio door frame).

 

Traditionally, prayer flags come in sets of five, one in each of the five colors. The five colors represent the elements, and are arranged from left to right in a specific order. Different elements are associated with different colors for specific traditions and purposes:

  • Blue (symbolizing sky/space)
  • White (symbolizing air/wind)
  • Red (symbolizing fire)
  • Green (symbolizing water)
  • Yellow (symbolizing earth)

Prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The flags do not carry prayers to 'gods,' a common misconception; rather, the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space. Therefore, prayer flags are thought to bring benefit to all. In addition to mantras, prayers for the long life and good fortune of the person who mounts the flags are often included.  (Yay for me)

 

By hanging flags in high places the "Wind Horse" will carry the blessings depicted on the flags to all beings. As wind passes over the surface of the flags which are sensitive to the slightest movement of the wind, the air is purified and sanctified by the Mantras.

 

The prayers of a flag become a permanent part of the universe as the images fade from exposure to the elements. Just as life moves on and is replaced by new life, Tibetans renew their hopes for the world by continually mounting new flags alongside the old. This act symbolizes a welcoming of life's changes and an acknowledgment that all beings are part of a greater ongoing cycle.

Pose of the Month 
 
Sukhasana
(Easy Seated Pose) 
Easy Seated Pose 

1.  Fold a blanket or two into a firm support about six inches high.  Sit close to one edge of the blanket and stretch your legs out in front of you on the floor.

2.  Cross your shins, widen your knees, and slip each foot beneath the opposite knee.

3.  Relax the feet so the outer edges and inner arches rest comfortably to the floor and legs.  You can look down and see a triangle formed by the two thighs and the crossed shins.  There should be a comfortable gap between the feet and the pelvis.

4.  Sit with a neutral pelvis.  To find neutral, press your hands against the floor and lift your sitting bones slightly off for support.  As you hand there for a few breaths, make your thigh bones heavy, then slowly lower your sit bones slightly off the support.  As you hang there for a few breaths, make your thigh bones heavy, then slowly lower your sit bones lightly back to the support.  Try to balance your pubic bone and tail bone so they're equidistant from the floor.
 
5.  Either stack your hands in your lap, palms up, or lay your hands on your knees, palms down.  Lengthen your tail bone toward the floor, firm your shoulder blades against your back to your upper torso, but don't overarch your lower back.
 
6.  You can sit in this position for any length of time, but if you practice this pose regularly, be sure to alternate the cross of the legs dividing your practice time in half or switiching the cross from day to day.
